Broken

MY IMAGE(S):

GENERAL INFORMATION:
Title: Broken
Year Created:
Medium: Oil
Surface: Board
Dimension: 24” x 36”
Allow digital alterations?: Yes!

MY COMMENTS:
Lately, my abstract works have taken on a shattered or broken look to reflect the theme of the painting. This painting, titled “Broken,” represents the feeling of somebody being broken mentality, physically, etc.

MY QUESTIONS FOR THE GROUP:
Style. Does it work?

Re: Broken

I can't really suggest any improvement because this piece has such an individual and fascinating style, perhaps the only thing it could be worth doing is experimenting with different colour schemes - perhaps something a little more subdued.
Overall though, a very unique and interesting appearance, and yes, the style does suit the subject matter well.

Re: Broken

I would say yes, definitely. Aesthetically it's brilliant.

I'm not sure if it's intentional or not, but the human figure is a bit confusing, anatomically. To me it looks like the legs connect to the torso in a weird way, where the back leg almost looks like it's connecting in the foreground, rather than back... if that makes sense.

I'm not saying an abstracted figure needs to be anatomically correct, but in my opinion it's a little bit distracting in this case.

Only a little bit, however. As a whole I think the image is quite beautiful, and portrays exactly what you intended. In fact, I think anyone should be able to easily see how this portrays depression and melancholy without even reading the description or title. That's how well you've nailed the subject, right there.

Re: Broken

Thank you. I was trying to make the larger figure looknlike it’s holding someone like a baby, could that be the cause? Again thank you to everyone who replied

Re: Broken

Here’s the current one I am working on... this one is titled Breaking Space with Time. I hope I am allowed to post a different painting, because like for critiques on the style. Thank you

generally a good idea to post a new image in a new thread - you'll get more viewers that way.

Ah, sorry, I hadn't realized. But now that you mentioned it, yes, it's quite clear. It's a little difficult to tell depth. I think seperating the two figures with slightly more differing colours or values would've helped tell them apart a bit easier.

As for your new painting, I agree with La, you might want to put that in a seperate thread so it can stand on it's own.

As for critique on it; I quite like the use of colour there, and how some of the faces meld into one another. Especially the second and third right faces; they look to me as if the third eye from the right is part of both of their faces and I find that fascinating.

I'd say work on the rightmost face a little more, it seems a little less 'defined' than the rest.

Re: Broken

Interesting style, makes me think of stained-glass. Was that an inspiration? It works.

I also didn't catch that the first one was holding a child until you mentioned it.
