sanding glossy paint on watercolor paper

Good greetings, and I hope I am posting this query in the correct forum? I have recently completed an acrylic, ink, and watercolor painting on 100% cotton 140lb watercolor paper. Much of the painting's background is comprised of Golden high flow titanium buff, which has dried to a glossy finish. I would very much like to tone down the glossiness and I'm wondering how this could be achieved? I am hoping that gentle sanding might help to lessen the glossy sheen, but perhaps my idea is a bad one? If anyone has any suggestions, I will be most appreciative! Many thanks for your time and trouble.

How about testing the effect of sanding on a scrap piece of paper with a swatch of the glossy acrylic ink? That way no harm would be done to the original, plus you'd get a little practice with the technique if it were successful.

I have recently sanded ink on lightweight paper, but it was to the purpose of sanding back down to white. Obviously a very light hand and a finer grade of abrasive was needed (i used synthetic steelwool).

Thank you, Lamar! That seems very prudent and I will give it a try.

what about a thin coat of matte acrylic medium? I've never tried this but it might be safer than sanding. As with Lamar's suggestion testing on a scrap would be prudent.

I definitely would not use sandpaper. I use Krylon UV Archival Varnish, Matte finish #1378. I've used it on transparent watercolor and gouache. The finish is matte and it has UV protection.

Greg

Good tips! Other than painting over the area with a similar matte color, I would not be inclined to sand it. Or you could spritz over it with a spray opaque to tone down.
