I have done my sketch and transfered it to the bristol paper and I am ready to start ..... I think.....
It took 6 trys to get this sketch right...I am not sure why this horse has been so hard to draw....
I had a heck of a time with the bit and breast plate....
***if anyone sees any thing off please tell me before I start the rest!!!! PLEASE!!***
Thanks, Christina

Looks great so far!
I'm not sure what that extra piece is on the bit though. I see it's in the photo too. What sort of equipment is that?
Before you start painting this one, I'd also ask her what color this horse really is, because I'm sure that photo doesn't represent him accurately. Unless he IS mousey coloured. But it looks like an indoor shot, which the colors wouldn't be accurate, thus the reason for asking her his color before beginning. A good artist can make a portrait look better than the photo, after all. Be sure not to limit yourself to just what you see in that photo.

Thank you Sherri!!!!
I am not sure what that peice is called but I know that some trainers use it to have mpre control over the bits placement in the mouth of the horse. I think if I recall correctly that it is aliitle more harsh than a plain snaffle, for increased control. this big guy is 16'3 hands tall and he is all power!! So I am sure she needs that little extra control on him!!!
Sherri, I am expolring Pencil art right now, so at this time I am going to do him in pencil, but I have asked to do Him and his Show/stable mate a paint hosre I just did, together in acrylics after I complete this portrait. She agreed... so after this I will be doing a large portrait of both together!!
The owmer is my old horse trainer and coach from when I was showing and I live about 20 min.s from her farm so I will be taking my own photos for the next painting portrait of them!! I am so excited!!!
If you would like to see the other I did of his stable mate just look for the "Paint in pencil WIP" here in this forum.
Thanks, Christina

Not sure the "offical" name but it's a bit keeper. It keeps the full cheek snaffle from poking the horse.
A full cheek snaffle is not harsher then a regular (well depending on what the mouth piece is?) one it just has the added bars so the horse can feel them aganst the side of his mouth. It also helps keep the bit from sliding thorugh the mouth.

I think this looks great so far. you're right-this is a hard angle to draw. lol i'll bet you'll have a heck of a time with those hunter braids! i know I always avoid drawing them at all costs!
i can't see anything off; but maybe one of the more reowned horse people would be of more assistance. looks great-i can't wait to see the finished product!

Hey, hey hey! Looking good!
I know what you mean when somehow you just can't draw that outline correctly whereas with a similar portrait you can sometimes do it in one go!
For example I did a large portrait of both my parents which I posted in the Portraiture Forum, the ouline just sort of flowed when I drew it. However when attempting another portrait straight after I just couldn't get it right!
Maybe it can be down to how you feel on the day. Shorly if you have had a busy day this could have an effect on that transition between everyday life and switching to art mode! I need to sit and relax for at least an hour before going into my art room, ok I will be posh and say Studio.
I will keep tabs on this one,
Paul

Yep its a bit keeper. Keeps the snaffle in the proper position, like twyla said.
This beautys color appears to be a "grulla" (grew-ya'). A true grulla appears to be a mousey grey/ blue steel color with black points. Beautiful and very desired. Have the bucksin/dun factor genes, and my all time favorite color!
If not a grulla then the flash may have thrown off his color and you may have to adjust it.
This is a beauty all right! Have fun.

My three year old recognized it as a horse. He really likes it. I like how he's coming along, too. Let us have more!
