scratchboard WIP- Madisyn

Well I thought it might be interesting to share my WIP in scratchbaord while Myorca is also working on his (hope he doesn't mind) to compare our two methods of working. It is clear that he works in far sharper detail than I do (itty bitty lines with his pins, while I work with an exacto). I have spent a little over an hour on this so far and it is going to be 5" x 7" which is the smalled scratchbaord I have done to date. My scans aren't as accurate as I would like (these look too contrasty).

My reference photo (my dog, Madisyn)

Details:

I will be coming back in and adding color to the eye after I am done with all of teh scratching, so I scratch it out a bit lighter (letting more white show through) than I would if not adding color later.

BEAUTIFUL!!! Please don't neglect how to put the color in, as I am very interested in doing that when I finally get around to doing one.
Also,...Sure would like to know... how did you take(adjust) photo for your beautiful dogs reference picture?
Great job so far!!

Kaye,

I'm just leanring how to add color myself and have been doing it with artist markers. I know many use paint (watercolor and oil most commonly) but I don't paint (yet) and am nervous about messing a piece up with it !

Regarding the photo- this is a manipulation, or rather the background is.

Here is the original picture without manipulation:

I felt the background was too busy, so manipulated in photoshop to the black background. Now I have this pic framed and hanging on my wall (with the black). I think black dogs are great for scratchboard!

Great Bob- I think it will be fun to have us both doing WIP at the same time. It is already interesting to compare the detail areas to see how the different working tools (and us, of course) work. Now our own forum- that sounds nice!

Thank you Dark Shades and ArtCrazy for oyur comments. I should have some more time to work on this tonight and put another WIP up then.

Looking great! I have a question about coloring scratch art. Uh, how do you do it? I read you use ink. But how would you mix colors? Could you use another medium, like watercolor?

Hi Crazeee!

I have heard people use watercolor, acrylic, transparent ink, Markers as what Crias does. I have not tried to colorize yet, but will in the very near future.

Wow! This is wonderful! I have never done scratchboard before. Makes me want to try it though!

Wow! Tried something new- had my Color pencil's sitting next to where I was working, so I thought I'd give them a try- initially it just coated on the black top layer, but I licked my finger slightly and the color rubbed into the white lines. I am not totally sold on the method yet, but I think with some more trial and error it could give me the ability to add more variety of color to my work. After doing this for a while I thought it wasn't a great idea to use my fingers because of all the oils and it was leaving a faded black look to the areas I was getting damp. So I and went and got a fine paint brush I used it just slightly damp over the areas I layed color and it seems to work! I know you can't see the colors too well, becuase they are suble in the picture too. I'll play with the technique as I go.

a larger example of the technique using the following colors (Prismacolor): Mulberry (top), Canary Yellow (middle), Ultramarine (bottom) Obviously the amount of black left still afects how much colr shows up.

Madisyn is such a beauty! Your really doing her justice too!

The color on scratchboard it interesting, I've seen it done before (have no idea where) I don't think I'm going to try it anytime soon though - I think I have enough mediums to learn! I'll just sit back and watch you guys do your thing... and enjoy the view!

PS - I asked you a question about visiting wolves with me in your photo thread (with the llamas) but you never answered - did you see it, or are you just avoiding me? *pout*

Another two hours and she's pretty much done. Guess this didn't end up being much of a WIP.

Detail (bear in mind what you see here is about 3 times the actual size. The completed pic above is close to the actual size.)
