My version of "The storm"

Bouguereau study "The Storm"

40" x 24" (inches) oil on wood panel.

The folds and wrinkles of the dresses started to become too intense... so I started making my own. The faces need some more work. I feel the mother looks more evil and the daughter looks more scared than the original

Wow , I too love him Bouguereau that is , and Im just finishing off his one of Etude tete de Jeune if you click on my blog you' ll see her, and you have a great start here sofar , so nice to see to see someone else with wip of his .....

I can understand what you say about the folds as I have attemped Dawn too but yet to colour her as shes in mono tone the drapery on that was so tedious but worth it for sure ...I do see what you mean about the faces , you need to watch the eyes on the Older one the viewers left is turning up at the outer corner and needs to be adjusted and the other eye needs to be in line with the other eye its to slanted I thought they were sisters ...the younger ones face need more work, it think she is looking to straight on in yours and needs to be looking more towards the viewer...just my obs of this, hope you dont mind but I am watching you and would love to see them completed ...

I think the harsh shadow on the mother's left cheek helps to make her look evil. Soften that and it should help somewhat. Also the nother's right cheek seems full while the left cheek is hollow. Balancing this would help. There should be a slight shadow to the left of the mother's right side of her nose to help balance the face and this too would help to keep it harmonized. I agree the daughter's eyes should look at the viewer. This would make her plead with you, no matter where you stand, for safety and help in their time of peril. I love the way you have executed this very nice indeed.

I understand what you are saying about the shadow in the cheek. I was trying to cast a shadow from the robe, but does look as though her cheek is sunken... i'll have to lighten it up

Do you think? I think it's the right eye that makes her look evil. Like this.

I know it's skewed, because I didn't manipulate the image properly, but notice the difference if you change her eye expression to look like this, for instance.

Here's what the painting would look like if her right eye was the same as the left:

I guess that the fact that the girl seems to be so suspicious about her mother just enhances this "evil" illusion too. And how the mother smiles, too. Maybe if her smile goes away, her expression will change to a more "neutral" expression.

Here, her mother without the smile. I tweaked the right eyebrow a bit to see if I can make her look a bit more worried.

Well, facial expressions or not, the values are very nice – much better defined than what I would ever be able to do with the painting knowledge I have. This is a great underpainting and your work will look great, Vic.
