I did enjoy it, thank you Laura. It was really informative! I loved all the pictures and the cfm info confirms that I won't kill myself if I try the enamels again (got my respirator!).

I am totally confused about safety in general in my studio. I am going to have to ping Valorie in particular about your setup, because I am in a basement. My setup is unsafe right now, both in terms of ventilation and fuel storage, and due to the climate I live in, I'm unsure of how to rectify.
Other feedback I've gotten, which I'm sure is the absolute right way to go, is really expensive to implement and also not necessarily practical in my climate. (On the fuel storage part).
As a newbie I love these articles, great one! Thanks!

I believe I saw part of this article before, Laura put it up here or on ISGB. It couldn't have been better timing for me. I have a new glass studio being built at this very moment. My DH was concerned about the total cost of the ventilation system. It had not been budgeted in, because we were not really sure what was needed. It is such a relief to know that all of the items required are readily available at Home Depot. Thank you, thank you, thank you. This makes me feel more at ease about what we are doing. CC

Thanks so much for your article Laura. It finally gave me the "kick in the pants" I needed to get my ventilation system done. Will be finished with it and test Flame the system this week.

Add my thanks here...as I think about how to fit the coveted torch in the garage....and since my day job deals with lung disease, the ventilation issue had to be settled in my mind before anything else....Have printed the article for the trip to Home Depot...thanks again.

Re: Hot Glass Studio Part 2
I am just setting up a lampwork studio. I have all the supplies. When I went to order an oxygen tank, I was questioned about putting it in the house. Is this a problem? The propane will be outside. Does it have to be certified by a fire department. I am afraid if the fire dept had to certify it, they would not let me put it in. The city I live in is very difficult to deal with. Anyone have any experiences or opinions on this? Thank you.

sorry julie but boise idaho does not have any climate issues. i was born in idaho, and i lived there for many years, and its climate is much warmer and more forgiving than here in minnesota. and i have my propane tank outside 24/7 all year long. no problems using it when its +100F or -40F outside. there is no reason to stop you from putting your fuel outside. it really is not up for debate. it is illegal, and very unwise to keep a propane or other fuel cylinder/tank inside a structure, and it will invalidate your home owners insurance and put your entire family at risk. and the same is true for ventilation. you need a large flow rate of the order of 350 cfm or higher, a high throat velocity, a good make up air supply that has its inlet away from your tanks. if you want to pursuit lampworking as a hobby or job, you need to do it right and safely.

Thank you Laura. This is something that I need to attend to soon and I'm so glad that you took the time to put it all together even though other parts of your life are apparently not going so well. Bless you.

Laura, thank you for the article. I especially liked seeing how different approaches to solving the same problem.
Sorry to hear things are not going well for you. I hope things improve soon! It is good to see you back in the group again.
