Panasonic Pencil Sharpeners

Anyone who knows me also knows I can't function without my Panasonic pencil sharpeners, LOL. Seriously, I have the large electric one in my studio and carry the KP4A battery one everywhere else. I wanted to replace the battery one recently and found they are out of stock everywhere.

I was told that someone called Panasonic and learned they are not even manufacturing sharpeners any longer. Say WHAT?

They were the only ones with those heavy duty steel blades, and none of the other brands produce anything near the long, thin point the Panasonic does.

Has anyone else run into this? If so, what are you going to use when your last Panasonic kicks the bucket?

Re: Panasonic Pencil Sharpeners

We've told too many people about this sharpener!!
It looks like one might be available here, Ann. I did see one site list it as a discontinued Panasonic product. This is a sad day........

Re: Panasonic Pencil Sharpeners

Thanks Elaine! I did place an order from the link you posted. I'm crossing my fingers it goes through because yesterday I ordered some from another online place, but this morning received a notice that they were all gone and my account would not be charged.

The decision to discontinue these will be a huge disappointment to many artists. All my students use it and I don't know what I am going to suggest to new the ones now.

Re: Panasonic Pencil Sharpeners

Hi folks,
New here but saw your comment about Panasonic KP 4a being hard to find or perhaps discontinued. Panic set in & I ordered another one immediatley. I cannot live without mine. Use graphite and cp so absolute must for both! Thanks for the heads up!

Re: Panasonic Pencil Sharpeners

Ann,

The Panasonic is a helical blade sharpener (sprial cutter blade), rather than a single blade sharperner which is just an normal handheld sharpener that's been motorized.

Helical blade or spiral cutter blade is what you should look for.

Derwent and Exacto have helical blade battery sharpeners (as well as single blades, which you don't want).

This is a link, on Amazon, to the Exacto Helical blade battery sharpener

This is the Derwent (the large one pictured is the helical bladed version)
http://www.pencils.co.uk/products/essentials.aspx?sid=2

And someone, awhile ago, recommended the iPoint which looks like it has a helical blade, though I'm only judging from an online pic of it. iPoint Battery 2dPowered Pencil Sharpener

Hope that's of some help.

Judy

Re: Panasonic Pencil Sharpeners

The iPoint sharpener is a helical blade. I have one and it has an automatic cut off. However, the needle sharp point is not achieved. I was very disappointed. In addition, there is a warning on the packaging that this sharpener is not for colored pencil. I still use it, but run a graphite pencil thru it before I start any colored pencil session. I have found that I have to go to a manual sharpener for a true needle point. That said, I was saving up for the Panasonic. (Rats!)

Thanks for posting the blade type, Debby! Good to have Judy's assumption confirmed.

They all say that. The electric sharpeners I'm using I've had for ... 4 or 5 years now? And no issues from either of 'em (Boston School Pro & Exacto Powerhouse, if anyone was wondering) knock on wood! Running a graphite pencil through (easy enough with my boy-beast doing homework!) every now & then is a good idea no matter what.

I have been using A Dahle 133 for several months now and love it. It doesn't eat up the lead, has a dial that you set for the degree of sharpness you prefer. It is a rotary dial, just a couple of turns and you're back in business, have not had any breakage of my Primsacolors with this one, can also get replacement blades. Paid under $20 at Hobby Lobby. Also accepts different thickness of pencils.

Re: Panasonic Pencil Sharpeners

Ann,
My order didn't go through either. Got the same message you did this morning. So..... put hubby on the hunt!

Judy it certainly helped to know it's the Helical blade since I didn't know what it was called. I wouldn't mind an electric one as long as it's not a behomoth since I need space. I went through 4 or 5 before finding the panasonic that really worked. Ughh. I have a major show coming up in April & am trying to get as much work completed as possible! No pressure, of course. No never!

You're welcome pencilnbrush.

If you dont mind using a hand-crank sharpener, the A Dahle 133 , that Nancy Lynn suggested is also a helical balde sharpener and works quite well indeed. It can be table mounted.
I also have one of those as a back up sharpener to my 3 Panasonics (which I guess I will now treasure like diamonds...). I use the A Dahle 133 too from time to time.
I think all hand-crank sharpeners are helical/spiral cutter blades (like the ones we used to have on the wall in grade school if you're as old as I am...LOL).
It's not electric, but a little exercise while drawing can't hurt!

They are still on the walls in school.
