Different Strokes: Acrylic Forum Project, January

Welcome to the January edition of Different Strokes.

If you would like to host a Different Strokes, please see the Schedule thread here - it is a sticky near the top of the main forum page.

Please read the guidelines below carefully.

GUIDELINES:

On the first of each month a reference photo (or photos) will be posted in a thread entitled "Different Strokes".

Each member interested in taking the challenge will create a painting using the chosen reference(s) (whole or cropped) and on the 20th of each month participants will upload their interpretation of the reference for discussion within this thread, finished or not.

PLEASE DO NOT UPLOAD WORK TO THE THREAD BEFORE THE 20TH OF THE MONTH.**

At the end of the month the thread /discussion will be closed and a new challenge will begin.

Artwork can be any size on any surface but MUST be acrylic. Monthly references will be selected by the guides and moderators (but please note the additional comment above).

**Please note, the single 'reveal' date is chosen so that we do not influence each other with our individual interpretations ...... that's the whole point of it being called 'Different Strokes'!

THIS MONTH'S REFERENCE:

Rusty old automobile (from my own photos)

This vehicle was one of many we found in the Alaska Museum of Transportation and Industry. They house a little bit of everything including aircraft, construction and mining equipment, tractors and farm machinery, fishing boats, railroad locomotives and road vehicles. Lots of rust and metal to practice and I've never painted metal except on the computer.

Don't forget, you may crop, enlarge, develop this reference in any way you feel is creative! Enjoy your painting, discuss, without visuals, in this thread if you wish, but no peeping until 20th!

Have fun!

Yay, Elaine is going to play.

Not sure what I got myself into... now I have to paint metal and rust, or I could make it abstract blotches. I will muddle along somehow with all the great help around here.

Re: Different Strokes: Acrylic Forum Project, January

Thanks Maureen, I fixed it. For some unknown reason when I first posted all the html tags were in the message. I went back and edited it but I am curious as to why it did that. Oh well.

Welcome aboard Maureen, Nithya and Colleen. Warning... I might have to ask lots of questions to get through this.

Re: Different Strokes: Acrylic Forum Project, January

I think I am in! Took over an hour to figure out a crop, lolol. Sometimes they scream 'crop me here', but not this one..... What kind of car is this? I don't recognize the emblem or the bar across the radiator.

Neat pic....I will try if life permits....I need to do another car...the historical painting I want to try has old cars in it....so a little practice won't hurt!

Re: Different Strokes: Acrylic Forum Project, January

Oh goody, and welcome EP, Sue and Susan.

EP, I think I feel the same way.

Sue, I don't know what kind of car it is... maybe one of the guys can tell us. I did kinda crop it tight in the camera didn't I?

Hi Susan, will you do some of your texture? That will be interesting and I hope time permits.

I actually started on last months (the cardinal) a couple days ago. Have just a few tweeks to do and it will be called finished. I am a really slow painter so this was extremely fast for me. I think that is why I never joined in before even though I always visit the different strokes thread. I really look forward to the different styles and crops from everyone and it has taught me a lot. Thanks everyone.

Re: Different Strokes: Acrylic Forum Project, January

I asked on a jalopy forum and they didn't know either, lolol. Got it narrowed down to the 1920's though. Still researching it.

Re: Different Strokes: Acrylic Forum Project, January

I'm gonna try again. Just happens I have an old car from the same timeframe on my watercolor paper all ready to paint. I'll do this first-- to try out some rusty ideas. QQ 4 the 20th. Happy Holidays everyone. Kurlie

RE the emblem: I'm not old enough to know first hand, but from the looks, it might be a Diamond T from the 20's or 30's.
