Old man, WIP in Pastel

This is another WIP, 16" x 11", soft pastels on Terra Cotta Colourfix. I'll put up the first three stages and that's where I'm at right now.

Finding the lights

Getting in to some of the darks and establishing the colour scheme

And then throwing in some detail to give me a 'win' so some parts are nearly finished while most of it isn't even started. This is a very poor photo with lots of glare. I'll get better ones in later stages.

A lot more fun than my last effort which was a miniature in pastels and was damn hard work!!

Re: Old man, WIP

It is so amazing to watch these fabulous faces emerge from the paper. So wonderful of you to share the process.

Re: Old man, WIP

I thinks Nancy said it perfectly, it is like watching a face emerging from the paper. Great work

It's interesting to see how you started from one side of the paper and still have a coherent portrait!Very nice!

Re: Old man, WIP

Many thanks Sue

Well, I've come to the stage where I turn it around for a while to see if it needs any adjustment. Thanks to those who've watched

And a couple of details about one and a half times actual size just to show that it's all fairly straight forward stuff.

Re: Old man, WIP in Pastel

It's really beautiful. I know that's not helpful, but at least it makes you feel good! Besides, it's true. It's a lovely picture. The only thing, and it's minor, is that since his face is lit from the side, with the left side of his face in shadow, I find the sclera (whites) of the eyes look a little too similar in value. It may be the photograph though. I find with mine that photos flatten out similar values so things look more 'smoothed' out and flatter than they actually are.
