Exclamation ok light asked me to do this

Light replied to my post of early morning walk to work size 6x4 which i originally did for the postcard project which did not have much detail, ifinally posted in the pastel forum, light would like to see a larger version and maybe progress posts as i work.I'm not sure i should be doing this but what the hell nothing ventured nothing gained as i.m hoping every body will jump in with advice and comments along the way so i hope i dont mess up.So here goes early morning walk to work 1 soft pastel size 14x10,first of all i roughly outlined the background and sketched in the figures and filled in the lighter areas in the road.

OK i hope i'm doing this right next is emwtw 2 here i have filled in the foliage either side of the road, blocked in the sky and deepened the shadows in the road, iwant to leave my figures till last but my next problem will be smudging the background when i go to work on them i have never used a fixative before so i'm on dodgy ground here any pointers would be appreciated also feel free to comment if you think i shoud rework anything before the next phase.

This is coming along great!

I wouldn't use fixative but that's me. If you decide to use it, be prepared for it to change the tonal values of your work - it will go darker but not uniformly dark.

If you are just worried about smudging the background, try not to touch it. LOL! I work with my painting at an upright angle on an easle and keep my hand away from the paper surface. If I need to steady my hand I just rest the tip of my little finger on the surface keeping it still while I do so that, although my finger may pick up a bit of pastel, it doesn't smudge.

The shadows and reflections create a great rhythm.

Looking forward to seeing the next steps

guilliame, I think this is progressing very well! You've done a wonderful job blending the background!

When I'm working on the centre parts of my pastels, I put a sheet of white paper over top the finished area, and rest my hand on that. It doesn't seem to smear the area beneath it, because there's never much crud on the paper when I'm done, but I find my hand slides nicely on the white paper (just bond, like photocopy paper) without making it move.

Can't wait to see the finished product!

ok light asked me to do this

Sandra, thanks for viewing and your comments.I do my oil paintings on an easel using palette knive/brushes,as pastel sticks are shorter i tend to do them flat on a drawing board, also if i fix should i tone down the dark shadows in the road first i think they are dark enough as the fix would make them darker. Also as moderator would you be so kind to delete sugar honey honey/pineapple postcard for jakeally[2] progress/final,I've just read your post to Striver so i know now what i didwrong. Light and Olga, glad you like it so far maybe a while until i decide wether to use a fixative or not. Artdudette thanks for viewing and your comments,i'll try some photocopy paper to rest on,i thought of using greaseproof paper yes/no?.Regards.

If you like using your easel for art you can do this for pastel, too. I never do my pastels flat, they are always on and easel. I use a long stick with a wooden ball at the end to keep my hand away from the paper.

Oh boy, I love progress posts! Looks great so far!
If you do decide to use fixative, start spraying in the empty air next to the painting (NOT on the painting) and bring it across and off the other side. That way you won't end up with too much spray in one place. And spray LIGHTLY and use a quality WORKABLE fixative. I usually do spray mine.

You couldn't help me out with a link, could you? Where is it posted? Is it one of the separate threads, if so which one? cheers. s.

I was going to add that I do not use fixative (but the movie came on and I couldn't devide my attention anymore between good movie and good art). I used to until I saw the difference between fixed and non-fixed pastel. I suppose that the fist layer of pastel, the basic blocking in, could be sprayed, though I don't do it. But if it makes it easier for you to work on, by all means, fix away. I do take my pastel out to the deck every now and again and give it a good bang to knock off access pastel dust or clumps. At the very end, when I am all done, I will lay on the pastel real thick where I want as pure a pigment as I can get. This I do not knock off.

Well there is so much going on at the moment in wc i've been tied up in the postcard project but i have not forgotten early morning walk to work progress no 3 coming up i'm afraid i cannot be so positive and eloquent as djstar i just started on the figures being left handed i've been working across from the left and so far managed not to smudge,i have not finished all the figures yet i'm going to take a break from it and think about the next step, areas i might want to rework.Regards
