Mixing Colors: Recipes?

I just mixed a custom color for the first time. That was F U N !

So of course, I'm now looking at ALL of my rods as being potential ingredients in creating a new palette. LOL!

Here is a pic of my first color mixing. I'm doing a little Elmo-type head for a friend, and needed a better color for the nose. I mixed the top two colors to get the color at the bottom.

So what are some of your favorite color recipes?

That's a wonderful shade of peach Tink!! Great job!!! What are the color names for the rods you used to create it and how much of each? One thing I've learned when mixing colors is to always note how much of each color I used or I know that there's no way I'll ever duplicate it even remotely close. Mixing colors is fun isn't it (at least when you get something other than mud LOL)?

My favorite right now is a beautiful french blue. I mix equal parts of cobalt lapis with light gray. I don't have a pic of it, but I do have a pic of a hand mixed green I used in a custom order bead I made into a pendant for a customer a little while back. It's equal parts of grass green and white, I think. It's been a while and I don't have my notes handy. Hopefully the pic will come up.

Cool

I have found some very interesting combinations from my messed up beads. Have you ever been making a bead and know that it can't be saved? I take those beads while on the mandrel and pull variegated stringers from the hot glass. Of course I can't replicate them, but the colors can be lovely and I don't feel like I'm wasting glass. Lots of fun!

Great idea, MamboBeads. Even mistakes can be beneficial! Next time I have an "unexpected result" with a bead I am going to try pulling stringers to see what color combinations I get.

I love mixing color, which is a good thing since I work mainly with Spectrum glass, which doesn't have a lot of opaques unless you mix your own. Sometimes I think I prefer mixing colors and making complex twisties more than making beads. Only sometimes though.

Hey Tink, arent you clever??? Pretty colour!
Is there a limit to how many times you can do this with each rod?

Carolyn, thanks for the link to all of your favorite mixes. Mambobeads, great idea. I'll be trying it soon. One man's waste is another's treasure...
As the result of an overheated and overworked cased bead, i mixed trans dark amethyst with dark ivory. The resulting color on that bead was pretty, though the bead itself wasn't. I'd post a pic, but I don't think my scanner will do it any justice. I need to get a digital camera.

I wing most my mixing. You may want to try this. Gather a small batch of black, heat and roll in small goldstone, case in black, heat, roll, etc. Then mix, pull into a cane and with a little luck you will have some goldstone sparkle in the black aspects of your work.

Misty,
The best way to do that is to cut 1" pieces of the rods you want to mix, attach punty at both ends and start melting at one end, twisting and pulling as much as you can to obtain an even mix, then pull stringers. Some colours cancel themselves though, and you'll get grey quite often, but lots of mixes give great colors. What is interesting is that the mixing of two opaque colors can give a transparent one etc...
Sorry, I am very bad at keeping tags on what I do so I don't have any precise recipe... which also means that I struggle a lot when I want to redo a colour I like...

Thanks for all the tips everyone!!
I especially like Mambo's stringer idea.
I use a LOT of stringer.
My favorite combo is striking red over ivory for a gorgeous apricot stringer.
