Demo of Stained Glass

I am doing this piece for Ivy. ( for her Rod's Art Project )
Its of one of Rods flowers.
First, I print of one of Rods Pictures that I like, and trace a plain design onto some paper.

Next I place the design behind the glass.
On this occassion, I am using perpex, as I am sending this through the post, but I normally use plain glass.

Next I get my Redi-Lead.
This comes in stripes and are self adhesive, its VERY handy.

The next step is to lead the design onto the glass/ Perspex and then to use some Liquid lead to hold the joins together.

At this point, the leading process is complete. Wait a short while for the liquid lead to dry out.

Next, line up the paints you are going to use and keep them handy - paints at the ready !!

I am using a paint called Gallery Glass, it just pours out of the bottle and with a tooth pick or little metal picker, just move the paint from side to side, this gets rid of any air bubbles and takes the paint right into the corners.
This paint is very versatile and by mixing colours and drawing them into each other with the toothpick, you can obtain some nice effects.
Heres a close up of some of the flowers

Next, I added white around the flowers and a little touch of blue dabs and swirled them into the white.

At the point the work is ALMOST complete.
At present, the paint is wet and opaque. Place the piece somewhere it wont get disturbed and let it dry out. This will take approx 2 days.
When you return to it, the paint will be transparent and ready for hanging.
I will post the finished piece in 2 days.

Joe

Pretty!! Do you ever use brushes and just paint on the glass with it, or is it only toothpicks and the like? Can you wash it off if you make a mistake? Does the lead lighten too, or do you peel it off later? It seems awfully dark in the picture, but I may be just seeing it oddly. Yes, I'm full of questions.

I had no idea stained glass was so simple to do. Dear me. Was that the sound of me about to have even more supply storage problems?

No, I dont use brushes, just the metal pick thats in the 3rd picture.
The lead stays on the piece.
As I said, in 2 days the piece will be see through, like a suncatcher. Its dark now, but it will really lighten up.
You cant wash it of, but if you make a mistake, you let it dry then just peel away the paint from one of the corners and that segment will just lift out and you can repaint it.
Wait till you see it in 2 days when I hang it up to the light.
Any more questions, just ask away.

Joe

Absolutely beautiful Joe! I used to use Gallery Glass years ago when it first came out. I loved it, it's so easy to use and you can get quite creative with it. I Gallery Glassed my mothers glass shower stall and she just loved it. I've also used it on decorative bottles, borders on picture frame glass, etc.
