Mid-Winter afternoon

MY IMAGE(S):

GENERAL INFORMATION:
Title: Mid-Winter afternoon
Year Created: 2007
Medium: Acrylic
Surface: Board
Dimension: 16x20
Allow digital alterations?: Yes!

MY COMMENTS:
Here is the result of this week's project after less than 2 hours of work.

It doesn't look too bad IRL when we look at it at a certain distance. I can see many flaws when I take a closer look at it. One of the problem is the shadow beyond the fence (the horizontal bar does not project any shadow). I am also not completely satisfy with the right high trees.

Is the shadows at the middle left a problem considering that we don't see any evidence of trees on this side of the painting?

I also think that the overall composition of this painting is not at its best. I feel that the fence leads the eyes to the left side of the painting and nothing brings them back to the right part of it.

The title of this painting could be ...

In the middle of winter
The low sun tired out
Enlight the fence

MY QUESTIONS FOR THE GROUP:
Still new to painting and still learning ... Any comments will help my future attempts ...

Hi! I'm going to move your work into the WIPs forum where you'll get some excellent help from the folks there!

Re: Mid-Winter afternoon

Daniel, I love this one just as it is. I don't think I would change a thing except a shadow at the base of the large tree.

I am happy you are able to take more art classes.

I hope to do so after I retire in Nov of this year.

Keep up this good work.

Is this all knife?

Re: Mid-Winter afternoon

Good crit~! Now, unless this is high noon, there would be shadows from the trees, posts and slats on the fence.

I truly love the fuzziness in the distance and your color usage. Nice nice nice! But that lower left corner is left wanting something.

Remember you want to lead the eye around the painting. And you want all of the colors to correspond with each other even if only minimally.

Also, the branches are almost as thick as the trunk. Look at a real winter time tree and see how the branches thin out as they grow skyward.

Keep working on this. You've got the good bones already started and this could be a very nice painting!

Re: Mid-Winter afternoon

Thank you Silverlady & Dana,

First, Silverlady, yes, it is all knife. Agree about your comment on the shadow.

Dana, you made very good points there. It is exactly the kind of critics I am looking for. I know I have a lot to learn and those comments really help me. I thank you very much for having taken time to comment on this.

I must however admit that I don't really know why you moved this to the WIP forum. I feel that I've been moved to a forum with lot less viewers looking around and that I would receive less critics on this. I understand however that it is an unfinished work for the most of you. That's OK. But for me, the WIP forum was there for those who wants to present their process of getting their work done. I was wrong!

For now on, I don't know if I can post future works on the Open Critics forum ... Should I stay on the WIP forum?

Re: Mid-Winter afternoon

Didn't think you were finished with this, Daniel. So here you are back in OCF!
