Post Your Chinese Brush / Sumi-e Paintings here.

Lately, there are quite a few post and artwork on Chinese brush / Sumi-e paintings, so why not all just post in one central location. Here's mine, enjoy.

Beautiful artwork! I hope you get others to post their works here too, it would be wonderful to see all the Chinese brushwork paintings all in one place..

Promise...don't laugh! These aren't really "paintings", they're excercises we did in a class to learn & practice some of the basic brush strokes. Each piece of paper was painted wet in wet background & texturized with salt or saran wrap. After it dried, we did the brush strokes & images. It made learning more fun than just practicing strokes, although we did that too. Maybe something simple like this will give someone the spark to try!

arches 140 cp, 7x9 inches each, van gogh & DS paints.

Enjoy!

Oh this is just so cool!! Great roosters... I do have a question for anyone... when it says to "push" your brush... are you literally pushing the brush? Azure

Re: Post Your Chinese Brush / Sumi-e Paintings here.

Ex-fisherman - nice job with the fish

Lorraine - nice warmups leading to fantastic roosters you could be proud of

azure - I think "push" might be a translation thing. Not having it in context, I'm inclined to interpret it more like "press the brush into the paper" kind of like "click-and-drag your mouse" except with the brush. So it's like press-drag-and-lift. Clear as watercolor mud, right?

This week's WDE (19 Jan 07) is from China...I'm going to see if one or more images might be condusive to Chinese Brush style.

Great paintings, everyone!!! You know... there was a Project started in 2004, and the last posting there was October of 2006... so, it's still going!!! Have a look at Asian Brush Art...

Re: Post Your Chinese Brush / Sumi-e Paintings here.

Alrighty! I found an image in this week's WDE (26Jan07) to try in the Chinese Brush style. Not alot of time to play, spent 10-20 min on 9x12 rice paper. The image is about 8x10 with Marie's Chinese Watercolors & Chinese ink.

Didn't even wait for the paper to dry before throwing it onto the scanner. A few things I would do differently if I did this again. For one, I'd water down the ink more around the cherry shadows, they're too hard and turned out like outlines...not my intent.

Julie this is great!!! I love the simplicity of your strokes..

I remember when I joined the Chinese Brush project and posted my painting, that I got some terrific feed back. Even had the spaces explained to me and why they are so important in Chinese art..

Re: Post Your Chinese Brush / Sumi-e Paintings here.

I am getting ready to do my first Chinese Brush painting. It will be a simple small island, sky, water, palm trees(2) and two flamingo's... Do I have to use the black ink first or can I paint first, then add the ink later? Help!! Azure
