What Kind of Music to You Listen To While Creating?

I love music so much and it can be very soothing. But some types of music is distracting. And some kind of music makes you want to put down your pencils and brushes and shake your booty.

If your type isn't in the poll post it here. I happen to enjoy listening to Bob Seger's Like A Rock or Celtic music while doing my thing. What is your thing?

This is a total derail. I am so happy that the hairstyles from the 80's are coming back. Big Hair rocks! And my hair happens to be down to the middle of my back and naturally curly so I am cool again.

Hi, Kats!

There is a long-running thread on this very subject a bit further down the page....

Re: What Kind of Music to You Listen To While Creating?

Here's my whole listening schedule: ;-)

Most of the time, I listen to my iPod, which unless I'm writing or working on music myself, tends to be on all day from the moment I wake up until movie time at night. and I almost always listen to it on shuffle. At any given time, it has about 5,000 songs on it (I have far more than that--I have to rotate chunks of my collection at a time). Everything from classical to country to punk, jazz, rap, tin pan alley stuff, heavy metal, polka, traditional Laotian music . . . you name it, I've got it. I just love music, and I love every kind, from the most commercial (I've got the recent Paris Hilton album on there at the moment, for example) to the most experimental (I've also got stuff like John Cage, Stockhausen, etc. on there) . . . so it all works for me. My two favorite musical artists, just in case you're wondering, are Frank Zappa and Igor Stravinsky, but I love many artists, and there are really none I dislike.

For about one, occasionally up to two hours per day on most weekdays, I listen to Howard Stern on Sirius. I usually listen to him when I'm doing things, like cleaning or easy maintenance kinda tasks (which can include things like varnishing paintings, framing, etc.), where I can concentrate on what Howard is saying. I used to listen to the whole show every day, but it takes too much time (he's often on the air for 5 hours), and talk is distracting to me for concentrating on other things, including painting/visual art.

Occasionally (maybe once or twice per week) I substitute the iPod with music on Sirius, and for that, I'll leave a station on all day--I just change stations each time I listen to it. If I listened to channel 30 last time, I'll listen to 31 next time. So that's another way I get to hear a large variety of music. Because talk tends to be distracting to me, I usually skip over the other Sirius talk and news stations.

I want an Ipod for christmas! I have not thought of Frank Zappa in years. It is good to be able to enjoy an ecletic music taste. I love this one artist from Iran, have a tape and cannot understand a word he sings but it touches me.

I love to listen to NPR while creating too or the BBC; to get a more well rounded view of the news and politics. On Sat. morning I listen to the Click&Clack Brothers on NPR; two whacky car mechanics from Mass. They are a hoot!

Either jazz or Christian music depending on the project, as much as I like Metallica, it's just not music that gets the creative juices flowing... Too busy headbanging!

Re: What Kind of Music to You Listen To While Creating?

I go though phases with what music I listen to.

My current playlist (I use my computer) has Aretha Franklin, Dr. Hook, followed by Foreigner, REO Speedwagon and ending with Def Leppard. Strange lineup, I know.

I also have a country lineup that I like to play. I just haven't been in the mood for them lately.

Hello friend! You're the only other person I've heard say likes Dead Can

Dance too. I also like jazz but not the New Orleans kind, I like the

contemporary, lately I love to paint to William Orbits "Pieces in a

Modern Style" CD. I like and listen to it all but those are my current favorites.

I just love 'towards the within', the song 'host of the seraphim' and also Brendan Perry's solo album is good too! Their music takes me to another place.
