Watercolour Batik
Excellent article, Nick, really does get down to the nitty gritty of your technique. I would have to do it in the bathroom though, all that water!
Well done!
PS This thread was created by clicking on the "Start a Conversation" link in the article, but duplicates Carly's. I'll ask the Mods to sort it out.

Re: Watercolor Batik
This is an outstanding article!!
Quick question, Nick - when you spray the color to "wash" it - how do you get the "washed" color off the painting? Do you spray it all the way to the edge and off the paper, or just enough to loosen the paint and then blot it?

Re: Watercolor Batik
Another superb and informative article Nick. Not only are you a wizard and painting - you've definitely got the ability to make your process and technique crystal clear. (? What is the title of your upcoming book?)

For some reason, the Publisher will not sustain a link to its own conversation thread. I'd advise that everyone use the 'back' button to post to this thread, if you start out here!
Thanks and my apologies,

Re: Watercolor Batik
I wondered where this thread is, I can't find anything on this site anymore. Thanks for the comments! Debra, everything gets sprayed off the painting - Here's a pic of spraying a larger painting - I hold it up and go at it. Uses lots of water and makes a big mess, but then I'm always suspicious of clean and tidy studios.

Re: Watercolor Batik
That was terrific! I loved reading that article. Love the picture, of course. My favorite part was the trick with the blue 'outline,' which really set the figure into the ground wonderfully. The 'ugly slash' of color near the very end, across the whole, was amazing, though I don't think I'll have much occasion to use that one (don't paint underwater things much).
Funny story: About a month ago I posted a 'quickie' abstract w/c in the Ab/Con forum, asking the artists there for advice on finishing it. I got lots of very specific, but somewhat conflicting, advice. Being a complete fool, I then tried to add just about all the advised changes to my one little painting. Then I laughed hysterically at the mess I had made (all on the top part of the page, fortunately) -- and took it to the tap and washed off the whole of the top part. (Btw, it worked -- ended up with just the background I needed!) So if you work smaller, and don't want to spray water all over your floor, you might still be able to get a similar 'neat' effect.

Any Carol is a friend of mine!....thanks for the post.
Used many sinks, especially in apartments and hotel rooms. I've probably clogged a lot of drain pipes with acrylic paint.
Hmm, always wondered what would happen if somebody took everyone's advice. there must be some great Mark Twain quote about that - I'll go look it up -Nick

Re: Watercolor Batik
I'm about halfway done, following Nick's WIP (very easy to comprehend, thank you). I did not see anything about 'spraying the water completely off the sheet,' so I have been using TONS of paper towels.....seems to be working great (so far).

Re: Watercolor Batik
Hi Magally.... somewhere in there I mentioned holding the painting up while spraying it, because in the original thread that was unclear. Maybe it still is - I should have made a pic of that. Here's a shot of me spraying a different painting (though not for the same technique). This one was 48" long, so I had to hold it over the floor. Smaller ones I hold over the table or water bucket. However you do it, you've usually got a mess on your hands!
I'd appreciate seeing your painting when you're finished, thanks. Nick
