A big thank you to James Bitzel for providing a detailed portrait painting of a great dane.

Hi James,
The Great Dane is magnificiant, beautiful work, congradulations.
Excuse my ignorance, but what is the "golden taklon
flat" you mentioned? Is it a template?
Thank you.

OPPS, To my embarrassment, I just found the answer to my question. It is a flat brush. Good grief.

Re: Great Dane Portrait in Acrylics
Much applause, james, your Great Dane is just beautiful. You captured his strength. One question.. How did you get such a precise outline that you filled in in black? Free hand, traced, (a wing n a prayer, as I do?). I kinda feel like I'm cheating if I use a pattern and trace it. Course, I guess the end justifies the means. As in, scanning, printing, cutting out & tracing! Am I alone or do others of you do that!
At any rate, your work is excellent and your explanation very helpful.

Re: Great Dane Portrait in Acrylics
GREAT piece....... I would suggest making the photos smaller, so we can all compare at once , the original photo, and the finished piece..unless you did that on purpose ?

Re: Great Dane Portrait in Acrylics
Lovely, James. I've just started painting in acrylics - I usually do animals in pastel - so I've been particularly interested in your article.

Re: Great Dane Portrait in Acrylics
Hi James, hope you are still "on" WC.. After 3 years, I'm back with your demonstration of the black Great Dane. I'm attempting to do a totally (?) black cocker and needed help. I'm going to try to use your guidelines to do her.. Thanks again. I printed your info last time... but have 'graduated' a tad on the computer and was able to download your photos to my own folder for guidance! Thanks so much..... LouAnn

Re: Great Dane Portrait in Acrylics
Hi James, thanks for the inquiry.. Yep you 'helped' a lot. I had two black dogs in a row to to. The owners were totally happy, so guess they were a success. "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder".. don't know who said that but sure was right! Here's the two dogs.. (Hope this isn't a faux pax - if so I'm sure it will be removed).. Thanks for posting your work! LouAnn
OOOps one was too big. Going to have to 'reduce' it. But can't right now. But at least Gizmo came thru ok!

Re: Great Dane Portrait in Acrylics
There is no better feelling as an artist as to know you helped someone, well besides maybe a fat paycheck. But fyi I actually recieved alot of criticism for those dogs because I didn't use enough colors within the black dogs. I'm glad your customers are happy.
A little background... do you believe I listed that Great Dane painting on ebay and no takers, I even tried to donate it to the great dane shelter here for them to raffle off, but alas no takers. My mom likes it but as an artist you can't give everything to your mom, how would you ever pay for supplies. So I regret to inform you it is sitting in the garage right now with the ants and roaches.
