Talking Group Bonding: Tell Me 5 Things about You!

Various threads on loss, sadness, and mudflinging have made me decide one thing: I know very little about many of you other than that you work with glass.

Maybe we'd all be more connected and know each other better if we learned other things about ourselves. And pbhthththt, it's just fun, and I'm curious! So list 5 things that we, as a group, don't know about you! Folks have such diverse interests, jobs, and life histories, I can't wait to learn more about the people behind the teeny icons I see, and the beads!

I'll start:

I live in Oregon (moved here last year) but I'm a Jersey Girl, having spent my first 20 years there before a long stint in California. (I want to meet some Portland area glassfolk, anyone? I don't know anyone else who does this "in person.")

I've been practicing bellydance for about 6 years.

I worked in a high-end restaurant kitchen for a year for free a few years ago, just to see what it was like to be a woman in a kitchen full of Latino guys working with wonderful food. I wrote a book about it that is currently collecting some fine rejections ("Great writing, you aren't famous enough, sorry.") That was at night. By day am I a geek, designing and building web sites for fun and profit. I've worked with Microsoft and Xerox, and had a hand in building and/or designing nike.com, starbucks.com, us.playstation.com, homedepot.com, wamumortgage.com and other large sites.

I have a tattoo and my belly is pierced.

I am happily married to a wonderful DH, but occasionally miss all the time I had alone when I was single. Being alone is not the same as being lonely.

Re: Group Bonding: Tell Me 5 Things about You!

OK, this looks like fun. And God knows we could use the diversion.

1. I live in south central Michigan, in a small town...I grew up five miles from here, but lived in Boston and New Hampshire 15 years ago when I graduated from college. My ex-husband and I had a great time there. (another fun fact: he and I are friends now, even after divorcing, and his wife is awesome).

2. I have two sons and a stepson, they are 13, 11, and 9. And being a stepmother is a challenge sometimes ... my stepson is very spoiled by his mother, and sometimes it's saddening (and hard) to watch.

3. I'm a senior technical writer for a large, pretty corrupt software company. It's an OK job. I work at home, and it's not hard ... so really there's nothing to complain about in that regard! I never get away from my work, but nor am I spending 3-4 hours a day on the road getting to/from either.

4. My favorite food is Mexican. I'd walk a million miles over hot glass for good salsa.

5. I am happily married to the man of my dreams, the best husband in the world. Life is good!!

Re: Group Bonding: Tell Me 5 Things about You!

Let's see... five things you don't know...

1. My best friends in the whole world are my immediate family. My wife, my kids and my Dad. I guess that's why I never really want to go out... I've got it all right here at home.

2. I've always worked for myself. The few real jobs I tried didn't last long. I would never make it in the corporate world. I'm a horrible employee. I fire myself regularly. I guess I'm a really bad boss too, because I keep rehiring myself.

3. I enjoy fishing and diving. I love the ocean. Sometimes I regret not living closer to it. I need another trip to the keys.

4. I am easily goated into a debate. Especially by the witless. If you want to have a battle of wits and come unarmed, I'm gonna hand you yer arse in a hat- LOL

I know it's a horrible waste of time... but I'm a sucker for a good tongue lashing. Any body wanna argue about something?

5. I also have a few tatoos and have a piercing about 8 inches below my belly button

I can't wait to read every one elses.

I had something funny to say, but forgot!

Much love... Brent Graber "Mr. Smiley"

I'll join in!

I live in Victoria BC beautiful place but LOTS of rain, I have lived in Calgary and Courtenay as well. We just bought acerage in Stettler....whoopee!

My main intrest in the past has been horses ( what a suprise huh? ). I have taught rising lessons full time for over 15 years. Horses were my profession full time till about 3 years ago when I quit, due to long hours, too much stress and little pay.

I love most all animals....except spiders!

I long to travel a bit more than we have both myself and my boyfriend rodeo all over but we often don't take the time to stop and sight see. Something we are going to do in San Fran at the end of the month!

I am a 4-H leader for our horse club, something I enjoy alot as I grew up a 4-H member myself!

Re: Group Bonding: Tell Me 5 Things about You!

What a fabulous idea! I'll play!

I was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio, and after a 20 year stint in Michigan, I'm back in Toledo.

I've worked with computers since I was in the Army in 1975, and worked for IBM as an engineer. I'm still a geek, and have my ham license (KA8ELJ) and am a storm chaser.

I used to be a well-known teddy bear artist/designer, primarily making miniature teddy bears. I wrote a book that was published in 1997, and still have copies for sale. I was also a contributing author for several books, and I was a regular columnist for Teddy Bear & Friends magazine for a few years. That is the teddy industry equivalent of Bead & Button During this part of my life, I worked with Disney, QVC and others.

I was a breeder of endangered parrot species for many years, specializing in cockatoos. I was one of the first, if not THE first, breeder of Goffin's cockatoos. I'm in the process of parting with most of my feathered friends, as they live with my ex in Michigan and he can no longer keep them. Cosmo lives with me in Toledo, and I love him with all my heart. I raised him from an egg. I was published in this endeavor, as well, writing for The Pet Bird Report and I was referenced in "Guide to a Well Behaved Parrot" by Mattie Sue Athan.

I live in a 100 year old house in Toledo's historic district, and share my life with John. We met when I was in the first grade, and have been best friends for over 40 years. He is a true Renaissance man: A fabulous cook, technogeek, graphic artist, musician, glassblower and romantic. And he is a stud muffin.

Re: Group Bonding: Tell Me 5 Things about You!

5 things? Let's see, I can't compete with the location of Mr. Smiley's piercing, but I will do my best.

1. I am a math prof at Clemson, and I believe I am the only one with an eyebrow pierced.

2. I also make quilts! Little ones, big ones, beaded ones.

3. I am married to the greatest guy ever, and last week he asked me for a bead making lesson. This week he doesn't want to make anything but hollow beads. Go fig.

4. I just killed my office computer deader than a doornail!

5. I have some great new friends here in Clemson, and we have started a monthly meeting for people who like to play with beads and eat (not the beads). One is tonight at 7pm at the Mercantile in Pendleton, SC. Come join us!

Five things about me by Sue Walsh of Bucksport, Maine

1) Grew up an Army Brat and graduated from Kubasaki High School in Sukiran on Okinawa. Graduated and came home to Maine and planted myself. My 2 brothers followed 2 & 4 years later- Paul graduated in Beverly Mass and Scott in El Paso, TX.

2) 50 year old divorcee with 2 adult daughters, Kris (28) and Amber (24). I describe my living situation as "I inherited a house. It came with my Mother and all the bills attached." Mom and I share a house and I'm becoming more of a caretaker every day. It's scarey. Nothing prepares you for a parent getting older and, since she's only 71, she's not old enough that we should be dealing with the health issues that we are. Since diabetes is rampant in my family, I had a gastric by-pass in May and have lost 60 pounds already. If I dodge the diabetes bullet, it was worth it. I'm feeling great and I'm happy with life, although worried about my Mothers health.

3) Been working with stained glass for several years, fusing for 1 and lampworking since May 2004. Haven't really looked back at stained glass or fusing since starting the lampworking. I "ppp" daily and enjoy every bit of what I'm doing. I'm on a hh and 70 pound tank of propylene.

4) Loan Officer for a federally chartered credit union but it's not my life. Rather, it's what I do for a living so I can afford my life, which is a quiet little life in a nice corner of Maine.

5) Excited about Maine and surrounding states lampworkers getting together and meeting. In fact, we're meeting in Porland this coming Saturday. I now have 19 lampworkers on my address list and I love WC. I joined in on a quirky thread on copy cops and learned one important thing there which I will pass on (free of charge here!): Spell SCHERMO's name right OR ELSE!!!

Re: Group Bonding: Tell Me 5 Things about You!

I LOVE knowing about people!

1. I have lived in Santa Cruz since I was 6. I left to go to college at UC Davis but for some ungodly reason, I came back here after graduation. My father was in the navy and we were stationed here when he was killed in a car accident. That was the end of my traveling.

2. My husband and I went to the same high school but did not know each other. I met him in the womens bathroom in a bar in Davis because his then girlfriend was puking her guts up on her 21st birthday. When I moved back home, I discovered that his best friend was my new roomate. Weird.

3. I used to be a swimwear designer until my boss was indicted for check kiting and ended up in federal prison. I am now a graphic artist/technical writer/marketing manager for a company that makes bar code readers. I have been in this job longer than I have ever done anything in my whole life. 14 years.

4. I was voted best legs in high school and I was homecoming princess.

5. We finished building our first home this May and it was the most stressful time in my life. My husband has type 1 diabetes and sometimes I wonder why I put up with all his crap and then I remember how much I love him and my boys and it is all worthwhile.

Re: Group Bonding: Tell Me 5 Things about You!

This is fun, I'll play too:

I was born in Windsor England and moved to the San Francisco Bay Area when I was two years old, and here I stayed. Cause I love it!

I am married 14 years to a wonderful guy, my best friend and we have one adorable little 4 year old daughter, one awesome orange cat, Rusty and the best yellow lab on the planet, Honey.

I quit my job recruiting Accountants after my daughter was born, cause as much as I enjoyed my job, not to mention the money, I like her alot better, so now I'm a stay at home mom, and beginner bead maker.

I love gardening and cooking and hate cleaning house

I'm 42 years old and 20lbs overweight cause I gained 50 when I was preggers food tasted sooooooooooooo good! LOL And I don't give a red rat's a** so there! Oh yeah, and I love a good joke!

Lunesse -- excellent idea! I'm enjoying learning about everybody.

As for me, well.....

1. I live by the beach, but never go; yet when I lived on Maui, I went every morning.

2. I used to be an extra (background actor -- LOL -- "prop that eats") in movies and television.

3. I study alternative science for fun (and even run experiments).

4. I've started writing several books, but haven't finished writing a single one.

5. Many years ago, I helped a very famous glass artist design some of the sets/props for an opera (he was set designer for that production).

He got a scorpion on his left arm. He isnít even a scorpio?

4. I have one tattoo on my ankle of an iris. It isnít colored, the pain was too much! I had my tongue pierced for a year, but my teeth were cracking. EWWW!
