First attempt at gouache paint

Holbein Artist Gouache on 8 ˝ x 11” cardstock.

For my fourth edition of a little illustrated card story called “Darkwoods Holler” I thought I would try painting the characters and scene in gouache rather than the transparent watercolors that I had used the previous editions. I must give IRV (Larry) credit for influencing me to give the gouache at try. I had my issues with the blending and shadowing, but I believe it fits my style of illustrating.

Re: First attempt at gouache paint

Thank you for your comments. My attempt at gouache came about due to a rather large and costly mistake on a complicated watercolor painting that I had been working on for several weeks. I had so badly damaged the paper in a spot by using repeated lifting out that I resorted to using a patch of “watercolor ground” for a repair. I then discovered that my watercolor paint over the patch did not match or blend seamlessly with the surrounding watercolor. Frustrated, I quite on the painting for a while until the idea of painting over the damaged area using gouache came to me. I just so happened to have a set, but I had never experimented with it. So, I am just trying to understand how to paint with it.

pa-paw. Its interesting that we see so many people transfer over from oil or acrylics you can see in their initial works that they are used to opaque application, yours looks like a very transparent use of opaques, it looks interesting, I am in my early experiments with gouache also,,, just the spelling of it makes me want to avoid it though

That's great, John! I bought a gouache set months ago and couldn't get the hang of it. This is a fantastic first (and fifteenth) effort!
