How to keep watercolor from drying out?

I recently mix a batch of chromic black and it kinda ended up being alot more than a full pan could fit.. but i remember that all the color that i use to make this black shrink when they dry, so I'm guessing the same would happen to this mixture... so maybe when it shrink, i could fill it up some more.. to really pack it in...

the problem is how do i keep this mixture wet for weeks? right now, I just put it into a wet air thigh container with couple of balls of wet tissue and put the whole thing into a cabinet.. would this be enough? should i also put it into a fridge?

Add some alcohol in the air tight container to prevent mold/fungus.

Yeah, you will probably need something to prevent mold,
and I do like you were thinking, a few days after I fill a pan,I go back and fill the cracks. this helps keep the pan clean,,its one thing if another color contaminates the surface, and another thing if you contaminate into the cracks of a dried pan

add in a ball of rubbing alcohol. Hopefully the container is small. Use vaseline on the rubber seal to make it airtight. Alcohol evaporates more easily than water.

I keep spritzing the paints in the airtight palette with distilled water every few days and keep a large cotton ball with alcohol on it in the mixing area. It will evaporate in a few days so you have to be sure to check frequently. I've never had any mold form as long as I do that.

Re: How to keep watercolor from drying out?

just keep it humid like you are doing.

Why do you need to keep it wet, just let it dry out, then add some fresh paint on top to fill in any cracks. You can add fresh paint to a dry pan, it will moisten adjacent paint and stick to it, you won't be able to tell it didn't dry all at once.

I just fill it to the top, the space it loses as it dries, that is exactly how much space i need to fill with water, it's hard to get it wet again if there isn't any room in the pan - though I don't think that is a big deal either way as i quickly empty room for that as I use it.

With honey its a good idea to just put a teeny layer in at a time and let that dry before putting more in, and fill up the pan in stages.

Can you put it in a tube? You can get empty tubes with open ended backs.

I use these for my pans, they are about 3x full pans and have lids https://www.containerstore.com/s/min...20pill%20boxes
the dollar store also has different sized of tiny containers with lids that you can keep handy for the next time

do you have glycerine in the mix, or not? Half a pan should not dry out. Make sure you have enough glycerine in the binder so the paint (after you knead it a bit with fingers) glistens on the top, and remains that way for days. This will not catch mold unless humidity goes past 70%. But always good idea to keep some alcohol soaked cotton in another pan in the box. If the color has been made properly, no water is required to keep it moist. There is usually no mold below 60% humidity, so if color is made properly and humidity is below 60%, it will remain moist without mold even in the open.

no, i dont add glycerine in the mix, since this are artist grade paint, they should already have enough glycerine since they dont crack when dries..

i just check on the mixture, it seems like it's working pretty well, everything is still wet even in hot tropical country, but the gum arabic did somehow separated, so i mix it up again..
