Chickadees in Snow [WIP, critique please]

Hello, again. I haven't posted in a while, because I have been doing so much schoolwork instead of artwork. But finally I am working on another collage.

I am using bits of magazines(I cut them up using scissors) on a cotton canvas. At the end of this artwork I am going to use acrylic paint for a snowfall effect, but for now I'm not sure if there is something else missing as well that would help this piece look more unified.

Please feel free to point out things that disturb you in this artwork, and let me know if you have any advice that would remedy the things that look off. I guess the main thing that bothers me is the tree branches and the green leafy parts and the snow on top of them, they don't look quite right to me... but I'm not sure what to do about it.

I love the colors, the composition, and the technique. If the branches bother you, maybe it's because that much snow would probably cause them to bend more. It doesn't bother me since I'm not a stickler for realism, but since you mentioned it, I just thought I'd throw that out there. Overall, I think it has the makings of a lovely piece.

Where I live in the winter, there are no leafy greens...the trees are bare unless they are evergreens which have very different types of 'leaves'. Really like your background...very cool colors give that winter feel. Why not continue that behind all the branches and the birds? Just a thought. Also like the black/white against the blues.

Me too, love it the way it is. The chickadees I've photographed in New Mexico in the evergreen pines and spruce trees do have greens under the snow so those are not bothersome. Very nice collage!

Thank you all for the nice comments. I think you are right about the branches, Cyndi... they don't bend quite as much as they probably should.
Eventually I decided the gray greens towards the bottom may be what is wrong, so I made it more grey and white instead... and I think that hit the right spot.

I'm calling this one finished now!

Thanks again for giving me critique and support.

Wow, that looks excellent now - I love it! The birds really stand out against the background compared with the first picture, and there is so much movement and life to it. Very inspiring! Thanks for sharing the first stage pic as well as the finished piece.
