January 2019 Watercolor Challenge - Orange Azalea

This month's challenge is a flower in mainly monochrome orange.

Full size photo in RIL.

Here's my finished, matted painting, which I did as a WIP in 2009.

Colours used were W&N Azo Yellow, Winsor Orange and Napthol Red. 15x11 on Langton Rough.

Hope you will enjoy this one, and start your year well.

Doug

Beautiful reference photo to start the year off, Doug. I'll make this my first painting for the class I attend on Mondays.

Lovely painting of it you've done, too. Wonderful color combination.

Your painting is lovely, Doug, especially with the lighter areas on the periphery of the petals. It gives a wonderful sense of translucency to them. I think I am all "oranged out' from the November pumpkin challenge, and am working on something from the A & W forum. Did you draw directly on the paper or transfer? I spend a very long time drawing first. But if I don't, it is counter productive to paint something that is not well drawn. Hence, I often tire of working on a piece before I even lay paint to paper. And if I start tracing, I will never improving my drawing skills.

Even more impressive! I would erase so often the surface would be marred.

I was also tearing up paper erasing my pencil mistakes.

Now I draw with a light gray watercolor pencil and erase with a damp paper towel. I have not seen any damage to the paper and the pencil line disappears when I paint over it.

Red.

Lovely fiery oranges in this azalea, Doug! Your rendition of it is glorious to see.
Erasures do not seem to harm my paper and I paint over them anyway.

I use a cheap Papermate pencil from Tesco which as a 0.1 HB lead and don't have problems erasing with the eraser tip or a big white rubber.

I was guessing, ys it says 0.7mm it is very thin and doesn't need sharpening.

Red and Doug, good ideas. I draw on drawing paper and use transfer paper. Then I have my original drawing if I want to try the painting again.

Re: January 2019 Watercolor Challenge - Orange Azalea

ok that's just smart! good tip, thank you JoyK!

Yorky, the painting is better than the photo. due to less detail it is much more pleasing to look at. this is a good excercise for plein air painters.

Doug, very nicely done and it's a bit of a challenge for me seeing all those petals together. May try this one and thanks for posting. Happy 2019.
