December 2018 Watercolor Challenge - Monochrome

This image always appealed to me but I have not painted it before. It is the memorial to Lady Lever outside the Lady Lever Art Gallery in Port Sunlight. It appeals and to my horror I found I had used this reference some years ago. Nevertheless it is a good exercise in monochrome painting.

RIL Image

And here's my take on it 9x12 on Saunders Waterford 200lb rough. I left out the fourth figure behind the three.

Hope you enjoy the challenge.

Doug

Industry, Charity and Education... I think its a great statue.

A whole village to house his workers, that is admirable. Well done Mr Lever. and all from soap.

I shall give it a go being I read up on it. Thank you Doug, and your picture is lovely.

Doug your rendering is outstanding. I could certainly use the value and drawing practice, but this is WAY above my skill level.

Re: December 2018 Watercolor Challenge - Monochrome

i'll second that!
there are no rules visible here, i'm sorry but i cropped away 80% of the photo...
the whole scene is just too complicated for me, her face is already ruined. please go ahead and delete this post if i've oversimplified the challenge, i'll completely understand!

if selling my point of view it could be said the image does bring a certain december mood.
18x26cm, white nights wc, inktense outliner sketch, fabriano 300gsm medium grain.
newbie's unsure the paper is right side up. 😒

Nice sketches.
But for me, the task is unfortunately too difficult.
I have never painted people.

It looks quite difficult -- outside the realm of my usual subject matter -- but I still intend to try it. Practice can't hurt...

After doing the sketch (trace if necessary) simply start building up the tones layer by layer, eventually finishing with the darkest darks. You will find it easier than you think, if a little long-winded. It took me about four hours in class waiting for the layers to dry.

I like your challenges because I have to paint things I've never done before: first time I paint people and cloth,I tough it was too difficult for me and I was quite happy with this until I ruin the woman's face! On Bockinford 7/5

Great work on the drapes Elaine. Take a scrubber to the face then smooth the paper down with the back of a spoon and repaint slowly in laters.

That is precisely the aim of the monthly challenges, to stretch your abilities and sometimes take you out of your comfort zone. Left to my own devices I would be painting architecture and landscapes, and yes some of my challenges have been my favourites, such as the scent bottles.

Elaine, the "fabric" is very well done!

Doug, I certainly agree with the concept of "challenge"! Unfortunately, I am so very slow it would take me weeks just to attempt such a complicated drawing. I am flirting with the idea of tracing, as I have never done it before. If I rely on that as a crutch, then I will not learn to draw well on my own.

Re: December 2018 Watercolor Challenge - Monochrome

Hi Doug and Joy, thank you for your comments, My name is not Elaine but Elsa on the forum (in fact my real name is Zelda ).
Doug, I've already try to scrub the face but didn't succed to do better..

Joy, I don't draw very well and I'm more interested in learning painting than learning drawing (I agree it's important too) so I've no complex to trace when it's complicated like this.
