Re: Nothing but charcoal...

David - Unfortunately, I still have a day job that gets in the way sometimes. It's good to be drawing again.

Thanks Harry - I think I'll have one more night to work on this drawing if I choose but I'll probably just do another block-in to get warmed up for the upcoming long poses. I'm curious... do you always follow the same routine at Stamford? It seems I'm the only one here doing this "long pose" thing.

Cheerio,
Earl

Re: Nothing but charcoal...

We usually have one or two poses over the two hour session. I have mentioned before that several of the people who attend would like shorter poses as a warm up. Mike, who runs the show is a bit set in his ways. The compromise solution is to move around and sketch the same poses from different positions. Not ideal.

This post is meant to demonstrate that sometimes things just donít go well. Blockin was ok until I started working on shadow shapes... then things started to fall apart. I was pushing myself to work as quickly as possible. At one point this drawing looked something like a ninja... hence my instructor drew the nunchuks. Sigh. Next week will be better. -E

This is a 3hr block-in/sketch in pencil. I did this study to help prepare for upcoming long pose. This is a new model that I'm looking forward to working with. Apparently, she's a classically trained dancer. She holds the pose really well.

You've moved forward a lot there Earl, I much prefer the way you have blocked this compared to earlier works

Re: Nothing but charcoal...

settling in for the long watch Earl I like your block in drawings, I'm not sure of the difference in approach between them and the long poses... but this one is going to be good

Re: Nothing but charcoal...

Block-in is just first step where I get all big shapes in the right places. Iíll start working on detail next, then rendering. Usually an accurate blockin takes me about 3 hours. Iím slow. But If the blockin is good things will usually fall into place easier. -E
