Portrait WIP x post oils

This is my first portrait and I literally have no idea what Im doing, I think its called winging it

I did a grisaille to begin with then realised I wanted a different BG so changed that and realised I should paint the hair roughly in or my skin colours would be out.
So Im now working on skin colours with glazes and adjusting anything else as I go including where my values don't quite work.
The eye on the right ( our right) is slightly out still and I haven't touched the eyebrows or eyelashes or lips yet which makes him look a bit odd, or finished any area yet....
Any comments/suggestions appreciated, Im about 6 hours in with the 3rd pic.

Oil on stretched canvas, 16" by 12"

Welcome to Portraits!
Just wondering what your reference is- and what are you aiming for with this portrait?
I do realistic portraits- so my comments are biased for that.
You have a good sense of the head shape- and all the features are in the right place. This monochrome look is also working. I would tone down the bright lower lip and I think you have lost some volume of the head.
Great first portrait anyway! looking forward to the finish to see where you take it.

Re: Portrait WIP x post oils

Thanks Bethany,

Sorry, its hard trying to decipher somebody else WIP as you don't know what they are still working on.
Im still working on everything, I painted over the back of the head with the BG colour so need to completely reshape that.
I haven't done more than block the hair in yet or done the lips or eyes/eyebrows/eyelashes.
Im still working on trying to get the skin colour as I want it over the grisaille atm then I need to redefine shadows and put in highlights.
He has olive skin and I seem to either make it too brown, too grey or too pink....
So a lot still to do.
Im aiming for realistic on the focal areas and softer elsewhere.
I suppose my questions are, do you think losing the edge on his right cheek etc works? and how can I best soften the edge of his hair so that in integrates into the BG without going dark on the BG and thus highlighting his neck too much?
Oh and any suggestions on which colours for olive skin might help too.

Looks very promising. A nice pose as others have said. There are so many different ways this could develop I don't think there's much more to be said just now but I would be very interested to see the result.

Thanks Harry
Im about 15 hrs or so in now and its coming together finally.
Haven't really touched the hair yet and the left eye and socket area needs darkening still and more work to do on the other eye, eyebrows and jaw and various highlights/shadow values.
I will probably fiddle with the BG some more too.
First pic is from about 12 hours in yesterday.

You have captured a very nice likeness all ready so soon. I as the viewer am pondering what he is thinking. This is going to be striking i'll wager!
