Northern Cardinal

I think I'm finished with this...12"x12" oil pastel on canvas. Getting the values and the intensity of the colors right in this was tricky. Do you think it works? Comments and critiques welcome!

I really believe that paintings with complimentary colours have that "POP" factor. Well done you got the "POP".

Re: Northern Cardinal

Lovely! The background is very good, too. I think the colours all go together very well.

Thank you All, for the kind words and critiques. I found the reference image for this in the Photos For Artists group on Facebook. They have a nicely organized selection of photos.

This is so beautiful! The eye is outstanding, and those feathers are packed with dimension. The confident, friendly expression on his face makes this whole painting come alive. I love this!

Re: Northern Cardinal

I think it works very well. I love the light on those feathers, they really glow. I like the colour choices for the background too, it really brings the bird forward.

That's a great Facebook group - I find artists are generally exceptionally kind and encouraging people . . . Good job on this! Nice colors and I like the way you rendered him. I, too, did this one and I'm planning on it being my Christmas card this year. Keep up the great work!

Re: Northern Cardinal

The Cardinal is my state bird and I love seeing their bright colors in the woods when I am out hiking. We have many that come to our feeder in the winter months and they are always a cheerful sight to see.

Love this piece!
