Color Mixing Question Part 2

Hi all,

I'm getting ready to do a painting for my son. And before I start actually mixing paint I have another color mixing question since you all were so nice about the one about the pear.

I'm going to do a portrait of XXXtentacion the rapper who was killed this summer. How should I mix the flesh tones for him? Here is the image I am using.

Re: Color Mixing Question Part 2

Not many responses on your question ... we don't have a lot of portrait artists and I haven't seen any around recently.

My own efforts at skin tones have been disasters, so not much help from me. Best I can do is point to some resources.

There is a portraiture forum on WetCanvas and it has a classroom. I quick browse of the classroom thread titles shows at least one thread devoted to skin tones. Here's a link to the classroom. http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=226

A Google search for: mix African American skin tones in acrylic will turn up several links to threads on WetCanvas as well as YouTube videos.

Good luck and please post the painting. Yet another in the long line of musicians, going back to the nineteen sixties, that have left us too soon.

Re: Color Mixing Question Part 2

Thanks I'll ask about this there. I totally forgot about that forum. Appreciate it.

Is there a way to simply move this thread there?

Please nice mod?

I'll move this thread for you ..... agree with Cliff, not many portraitists here!

A quick Google found this
. and if you are with Pinterest, there are pins there which might also help.............
... but I'm sure our fellow painters in Portraiture will come up with something!

Re: Color Mixing Question Part 2

I'm new to painting and have only finished a few portraits but I find using orange and purple mixed together make some great skin tones.

Re: Color Mixing Question Part 2

Raw umber for the shadows, raw sienna for the lighter areas and ultramarine for the blues. If you are making it naturalistic that is. Tone down the blues with a little of the umber. Enliven the sienna with hints of crimson and olive. Get the tones right by adding titanium white and possibly yellow ochre.
Alternatively do your own thing!
