9-6-2018 Plein Air

Today our plein air watercolor group met at the historic Agnews Insane Asylum complex in Santa Clara, CA. The 90 acre site was first acquired in 1889 and was the 3rd institution built in the state. The 1906 earthquake destroyed the main building and this structure was built in 1913. The facility was closed in 1971 and remained abandoned until Sun Micro-systems bought property and turned it into their headquarters. It is now owned by Oracle. I chose the main clock-tower building to paint on a quarter sheet of Arches 140lb CP.
Thanks for looking.

My setup. The sun moved and took away all the nice shadows by the time I finished.

your plein air group seems to hit the historic locations!

your painting has more personality than the photo!

Nice work!
I haven't been to Agnews since it was closed, but remember it.
Meantime, your group and mine are probably overlapping in territory and it would be interesting to share info on good sites. You seem to like what I like as subject matter.
Can we talk about that?
I'm organizing Burlingame Plein Air Painters on meetup.com for your information.

Looks great. I wish I could find a group around where I live.
