Sicilian Morning

Title: Sicilian Mo<br>ing
Year Created:
Medium: Watercolor
Surface: Paper
Dimension: 16 x 12
Allow digital alterations?: Yes!

This is painted from photos taken from the bedroom of our holiday home in Sicily. I have also included one of the reference photos I used (but didn't slavishly copy).

I took up art 3 yrs ago after a long layoff. I have mainly been working in line and wash and this is the first large format picture I've attempted in a while. I realise my watercolour painting really needs some practice.

I have broad shoulders, so all feedback is welcome!

C & C always welcome

Re: Sicilian Morning

well, i keep coming back to this, i like the concept, but i can't fall in love with it because of a couple of things ... the top of the curtains on the right are just wrong, perspective wise ... there seems to be no hang weight to the curtains. also, the whitecaps on the water are too white, too stiff, too even.
railing, deck and floor shadows are good and the concept is lovely.

I knew that there was something wrong with the curtains but couldn't identify what the problem was.

In your opinion would the picture have been improved by darkening the interior of the room? In retrospect I think the contrast might have made the light outside seem a lot stronger and intensified the subject.

Regarding the sea: I used masking to preserve the white in the sea, my plan was to create lighter patches by layering in a green/blue. However, when it came to it I wasn't confident enough in my watercolour ability to put another wash on it ( I had already had problems with the sky), so I left it. Doh!

Thanks for the critique and feedback. It's been a great help.

Re: Sicilian Morning

The soft light achieved across the floor gives the painting a nice sense of calmness.
