September 2018 Watercolor Challenge - Geisha

This is a PD photo which I saw on a WDE challenge and had a go at painting. Apart from the face, I found it easy by simulating the flowered pattern of the kimono.

Here's my version, roughly 9x12 on Langton 140lb cold pressed.

I traced the outline and applied colours randomly starting pale I used napthol red and prussian blue.

Enjoy the challenge, after the face, it was much easier than it looks, no need to slavishly follow the pattern. The tree was a mistake I think.

Doug, this looks great, I like the background behind the girl in the photo. Will try this one although it's going to be another one out of my comfort zone.

She's a lovely woman and I like your treatment of her kimono...remember this from one of our WDEs.

Hi Yorky Doug,

I have already done this twice in last month's challenge. Both times I used watercolour only...

kind regards

I want to try this! I wonder how it would look, Doug, if you gave her a little smile curl to the corner of her mouth and a slight shadow to her lower cheek area.

I find tiny faces very difficult. I traced the outline but when I look at this, I think the face is slightly to long or narrow, such small things alter the likeness. I even thought of turning her head to profile to make it easier.

It certainly is hard to do faces on that scale. Not sure I can do it, but I'm going to try!

I traced the outlines and that helped a little but I didn't start until I got a believable face. Even then the face should be rounder.

Re: September 2018 Watercolor Challenge - Geisha

I started the geisha yesterday and although I was hesitant to post it, here it is. I didn't go into any detail of her gown since it was hard to see all those designs on the gown. I ran out of watercolor paper and used a paper that is made for oils. Didn't notice it when I bought it but have been using it. Thanks for looking.

Great versions Lil and Doug! My Geisha's face isn't at all like the reference - too small!

Yes, the face is very difficult at small scale. Nevertheless, you made a nice job of the challenge.

Thanks Doug and Christel, this is indeed a challenge especially that beautiful outfit the geisha is wearing.
