Looking for paintings, drawings or prints that are both modernist and neoclassical

Off the top of my head, the works that best exemplify what I'm talking about are architectural, namely Auguste Perret's and Edward Luytens' work; but also musical, like Stravinsky's Pulcinella, Oedipus rex, Dumbarton Oaks and The Rake's Progress, Hindemith's Mathis der Maler, Strauss' Tanzsuite aus Klavierstücken von François Couperin and Prokofiev's First Symphony. This is an aesthetic that I find very pleasurable, and I'm in search of paintings, drawings, prints or any other 2-dimensional visual arts for inspiration.

William Bailey and David Ligare immediately come to mind.

Re: Looking for paintings, drawings or prints that are both modernist and neoclassical

I was flipping through a David Ligare book about a month ago. His stuff is alright. I wouldn't say it's great though. It's sort of got the right idea, but he didn't develop the idea far enough. He stopped at 50% when he could have been truly great if he'd just kept going the way he started. Nevertheless, I did like two of his paintings: Archer in a Landscape, and one called something like Achilles and Patroclus.

I'm seeing a bit of the Ancient Greek in those pictures the thread starter posted but I'm also seeing some Art Nouveau and Art Deco style. Either way, here's some stuff that might match.

I think this was an NC Wyeth picture depicting Odysseus.

This is by Jean Dupas.

This is Orpheus by Franz Von Stuck.

Apollo by Sabin Howard

Archer by Mark Jackson
