Bonsai Tree

I think the art of bonsai is a wonderful form of art. I greatly admire those with the patience and skill to create these minature trees. My son and I visited the Botanical Gardens in Washington, D.C. many years ago and I snapped a photo of a bonsai tree I particularly liked. Last week I did a painting of it in my art class.

Reference: My own photo
Paper: 140 lb Arches cp
Size: 9.5" x 12"
Paints: all artist grade: raw umber, buff titanium, cerulean blue, Italian burnt sienna, perylene maroon, undersea green, olive green, and van dyke brown.

Comments and critiques invited as always.

Sylvia

Re: Bonsai Tree

Lovely painting. I used to have some, but the only green fingers I have are from paint. The all eventually died so I gave up.

I love these amazing little trees too, and you have done a fine job capturing its twists and turnings and personality. Well done! -Patrick

Re: Bonsai Tree

Sylvia, you had a good eye when you took the photo, and an even better one when you painted it. A beautiful shape. I love how you sculpted the weathered looking trunk and giving it a sky blue background was a great idea.

Re: Bonsai Tree

Lovely start to my day reading your kind comments about my painting Bill, Doug, Karl, Frank, and Ernst.

Bill, It was that sculptured trunk that made me want to take the photo. I had fun playing with the varying shades in it.

I used a bit of natural sponge to paint the foliage, dabbing three different shades of green several times.
