some work from our Pacific Herring spawn 2018

A few pastels from this natural event

the Pacific Black Brant Goose stops on our beaches on the way to the Arctic along with the Herring

The birds, the spawn, the Herring Fleet in the background

the Herring harvest, quite a waste as all the energy is to collect only the roe
the waters turn turquoise from the eggs and milt

18 x 24" pastel from life

These paintings are stunningly beautiful, Dan, and I can't imagine what it must be like to witness this event in person; the noises and smells in addition to the colors! Are you done with snow for the year?

Oh, I wish I could see this event in person. So, thank you for explaining and artistically recreating this for us.

Wow, I am equally enthralled by your paintings and your subject matter! I had to look up the area where you might have painted this. I see that we share the same waters.

Last year I took a course and learned about the importance of forage fish to the Salish Sea. This includes herring. I might go out there and see if they’re spawning at some of our local beaches too.

Love your skies and vibrancy of color. What paper do you work on? Do you tone it first?
