“Adrienne” (WIP)

So I started this portrait this past Sunday.. I took a bold turn from my typical dark backgrounds. And I kept the overall temperature of the painting warm.. I think it works. I’m open to thoughts and C&C 😊

I think it works wonderfully with the cools in the face and the blue shirt. Great job.

Re: “Adrienne” (WIP)

Michael, you've done another portrait with you signature sensitive style. I like how the warmth of the background and light on her hair contrasts with her shadowed face. It's as if we expect a happy mood with bright lighting but Adrienne is not feeling it at the moment. I would ask you to double check the amount of blue reflected on her neck but knowing how my camera exaggerates the color I'll leave that up to you. You could possibly tone down or soften the white highlights on her shirt - do they draw attention from her face? I'm not being critical, just wondering how the lighting on her clothing affects the overall mood. You do such nice work and it's always a pleasure to see it here!

Thank you so much, Bobby, Donna and Mandala!

Re: “Adrienne” (WIP)

I’ve followed some much appreciated suggestions, and I’ve remodeled the face a little to more accurately reflect the model’s likeness. The mood is less austere and closer to the mood I wanted to portray... hopefully the painting is a improvement.. The photo is a bit cooler than the actual painting... 😕. For some reason I couldn’t photo it with the correct warm tone as you see in the original.

You did change the mood subtly, Michael, and it does seem a little less austere, as if she isn't quite so engulfed by darkness. I admire the way you don't settle on having a good painting; you keep at it until it looks and feels exactly the way you want! I love the way the golden highlights of her hair contrast with the cool blues of her clothing, btw.

Re: “Adrienne” (WIP)

Thank you, Donna, for your always encouraging words 😊. I wanted to post this “one more time” to show a photo that is most accurate with regards to temperature and values. I can’t seem to take a photo that correctly depicts the work (Sigh). I think the temperature and values help make this painting, so I sure would like to show that. Well, here goes (close, but no cigars)..

Beautifully done...hair, jacket, mood, everything. I used to have issues with color temperature when shooting art too. When I got a picture I liked some time ago I made a mental note of the time of day and weather. Now I don't try to take a picture unless I have the same conditions...mind you, I use an Android phone, not a camera with lighting equipment.

Re: “Adrienne” (WIP)

Beautiful... the light background works. I have done only one portrait in my entire life, so i can't really give pointers.
So i speak from the overall "feeling" of what i see... It's interesting to me that even though the eyes are not very detailed, you can tell there is a sad or nostalgic look right there... well done.

Thank you, Frances and Annette! Yes, Frances, me too! I change the
position of the blinds, wait until a different time of day,...etc. Not quite sure what works best 😕. I typically use my ipad, sometimes my iphone. I think I could use some lessons on how best to photo my work..
