"Girl With a Pearl Earring" copy - MI

8 1/2 x 11in oil on paper

This is my first attempt at painting a portrait (or tronie in this case) and I love Vermeer so this was an obvious, although not very original, choice to start with. I painted it at a smaller scale, and used multiple photos for references. It's painted with multiple glazes and layers.

raking light...

This pic shows the scale. The painting is taped to the back of a Monet book.

Absolutely beautiful work done here - a lot of care taken in producing that painting. Great job!

That is probably the best copy of that painting that I've seen!

Really nice work! I hope that the paper was primed properly first and lasts.

I did an direct method version of the Girl with a pearl earring myself last year. I used the images from the Mauritshuis as a reference.

Do you know roughly how long this took you to do?

This is as good a copy as Iíve ever seen. Congratulations. Only two small deviations that stand out to me.
1. Nose shadow
2. Line where her head meets her head scarf. Iíll attach a side by side.

Re: "Girl With a Pearl Earring" copy - MI

Naturally, as soon as I think I'm done, I see all sorts of things I need to fix. I ended up fiddling with the white collar, did some knife work on the head-wrap and shawl, added another glaze of black on the blue of the head scarf, etc...

Of course this all lead into painting the cracks that are visible on the original. I suppose I should probably stop now...

upside down knife work...there were lots of interesting highlights hiding under the last few layers of glaze...

highlights scraped on shoulder...

Started painting the craquelure, must. stop. now.

It's painted on cheap watercolor paper primed with a few coats of gesso. This was just an experiment, so no big loss if it doesn't survive long. Took around 4 weeks to finish, but that's only working 3 days a week, and only for a few hours at a time. I used the Mauritshuis photo as a reference, but also used others as I find different things appealing in all the different photos of this painting. My version is a combination of a bunch of different photos.

Thanks for the feedback Tom. I'll have to check these out and see if I can improve them.

No wonder I can't get the color of her eyes right. I just watched a video that talked about how the curator who performed the restoration of the original in 1995 said she didn't even know what color they were. Greenish/Greyish/Blue? At any rate, I think I have them a bit too intense...

Nice work. The flesh hue is abit different, though.
Or maybe I recall wrongly.
