That ole scary self portrait!

About every three years or so it seems a good idea to set up the mirror and do a study. After all I know the model, and he's pretty cheap!

I will share the finished 8"x 6" study on paper...a closeup, the initial boldbrush attack and then scraping back next day to soften edges before continuing...

Sorry, it's just a portrait and you aren't pretty.

Great job Larry.

Larry, I really love your work man. Your approach just makes sense, block stuff in, adjust it, tighten it up, and leave stuff that doesn't need to be tightened up alone (because it's really not the focus of a piece). I would be far too tempted to get all fiddly with a bunch of details that are really not the focal point of a piece.

Thanks Carol...

For fun...after shaving my goatee off tonight, I superimposed my painting using Snapchat over my face.

Not a bad likeness...hahaa

Re: That ole scary self portrait!

Thanks for sharing Larry...I really like your self portrait. I won't comment on whether you are "pretty" or not, but I do like your technique and expression. Very deep and intense. Great work!

Appreciate your thoughts, thank you

I guess that means you'll have to do a new "younger" portrait now.

Love seeing your block in stage and then your scrape back. Looks like you scraped all that sky blue off the background on the right in order to get the yellow, which looks really good. Nice, fresh painting.

The superimposed snapshat image is freaky-scary though.

Hhaaa...
I have done self-portraits about one every six years or so...so, it is interesting. I've lost weight. Without a cap, at sixty-three my hair is still relatively dark, the beard pure white..

Painting is sure fun...and I think once getting over the hesitation to scrape, push or pull...committing to stick with the game, one eventually bends the will one's way! Haha..

Thanks
