Use to denote nudity/mature subject matter Atlanta Jazz Singer X-Post AMAE

An oil sketch of a rather out of focus snapshot taken at an outdoor jazz concert at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta when we were in the States last year. I liked it because it seemed to capture the atmosphere of the event well in spite of its technical shortcomings.
I have used a very limited palette; titanium white, blue-black, raw sienna and brown madder. At the very end I added a few accents of ultramarine, winsor green and permanent rose.

You have captured the feeling of the atmosphere with it being out of focus. Love the hair and minimalistic colors

I agree as well! Beautiful work, Harry- you really captured a moment. Not easily done.

Good work with the limited palette Harry. Maybe a tighter crop (possible switch to landscape) would hightlight the singer more?

Its a compelling image you captured the singer and the atmosphere. I too am wondering about the composition.

Re: Atlanta Jazz Singer X-Post AMAE

Thanks for your positive comments, people, much appreciated.
I'd have to say that I strongly disagree about the composition. A landscape crop would make it a very conventional figure study and lose most of the impact. Those bold shapes in the background convey the angular jazz rhythms of the night and the big right hand circle slyly echoes the singer. The blurred foreground head holds the composition together and again would lose most of its impact if cropped.

I like it as it is, Harry. I understand the comments above concerning composition, but I agree with you. The non-standard composition and the background with the crazy angles says "jazz" to me. My eye is pulled to the lower right corner. Maybe tone down the nine dots (lights) some?

Re: Atlanta Jazz Singer X-Post AMAE

Thanks for the positive comments, folks. I see your point about the nine dot pattern, IndianaKate. Yes, either that or draw them properly in the first place!
