A case can be made that Christianity is the greatest historical influence on European Art, employing thousands of craftsmen to build churches that eventually where funded by the Dark Satanic Mills

St Andrews Stave Church Borgund.

Re: Just when you thought it was safe.

Hi Bill, yes the church is twelfth century though the art goes back much further into the pagan past. The porch is the most important place in these churches and are elaborately carved with pagan images, they link the interior to the outside and the past to the present. In art people just love looking back to the past, it’s nostalgia that kills art. You can see that in my work,

Dave.

Re: Just when you thought it was safe.

Hi David, Models like the general public come in all varieties, it’s what you do with the drawing that is important not the subject of the drawing. A drawing that distracts and undermines its own integrity like these do is to be avoided.

Dave.

I disagree Dave. The subject can have a significant influence on the drawing or painting. I like drawing curves, it inspires me - and every artist needs inspiration. I could have decided to draw railway engines, cars or landscapes but my preference is figure drawing. That's not saying I couldnt draw railway engines, with practice, but I just dont want to.

Re: Just when you thought it was safe.

David you’ll see in conventional nudes those based on the classical originals of Greece, can have no thought or inner life without losing their formal completeness. That’s one reason the subject or model is unimportant.
The modern atelier based on what they think was the classical tradition has turned the artist into an insensitive but well-informed camera, the drawings produced leave no room for the viewers eye to looks for analogies and develops them, so that the imagined may become more vivid than a photograph.

It’s very easy to produce bad drawings I do it all the time, it’s extremely hard to get away from totalitarian art and produce something worth keeping.

Dave..

Hi Trevor, nice to hear from you.
Don’t forget it was the predecessors of people who built the church that made a bonfire of the East Coast of England, so be carefull they don’t come back.

Dave.

Like you, my preference is not well-informed camera drawings. I did like your two portraits. I also love the photos of the stave church. That's quite a building, and quite a history.

Re: Just when you thought it was safe.

Hi Kate, nice to hear from you .
There are so many ways to produce bad drawings, they even teach some of the worst ways.
It’s very difficult to overcome these ways of thinking and working so people become locked in and so don’t develop.

Dave.
