How to add "pop" and "pizzaz" to Human Anatomy

In the near future I plan to teach myself human anatomy via painting.

Found an 1960s edition of Grant's Atlas of Human Anatomy at home, plus I purchased mixed media spiral bound notebooks over the holidays (due to your help, actually )

Question, how to add artistic "pop" and "pizzaz" to Human Anatomy diagrams, while still being informative.

Will mostly use Oil Pastels, plus some paint pens and micron ink pens.
