Website to research artists and value of their artwork?

Hello - I have a friend who has come across quite a bit of original art she would like to sell. They are names I'm not familiar with, and there seems to be nothing on them via Google. So my question is, is there a website to research artists and get values for their work? Thanks in advance!

are there dates? are there frames? glass? sizes? where were they 'come across' (all in the same place or collected over the years)? writings on the backs? are they dime store quality or museum quality, or somewhere in between?

ask the local arts people, societies, shops, galleries, etc. for any info they might share.

Thank you, La - it's apparently a range of artists in this collection. Many are not local, and in fact, they are far enough in the past to barely see anything about them online. That's why I was wondering if there was a site that might have obscure info.....but I'm thinking that's probably not the case, unfortunately.

Finding artists of the past is difficult. Most here wouldn't know the names of half of the famous artists let alone the obscure ones. The Tate has a massive library and sometimes Sotheby's sell work of many artists that are obscure to the majority. You could look through their back catalogues if you think the work has sufficient merit. I attended an auction of Edwardian artists at Christies and I doubt I'd heard of one of them previously and some work was exquisite. Better than many famous artists in my view.
