I'll let those who are more experienced portrait painters help with the skin tones. I just want to say how adorable this is! You are lucky to have so many young models to work with.

I haven't painted a portrait in years. So yes, let's have others chime in and answer that question. I have to hand it to you, the fantasy story works! I'm always inspired by the creativemess of others. She must be very happy with us.

Re: second attempt

Interesting composition and good work. These are my suggestions:
I would copy the portrait and try different techniques. For instance, I feel the moon is too close to the flying lady. Either I would remove it or make it smaller and place it at the corner in order to improve the diagonal aspect of the composition.
On her face, I would tone down the yellow flower to avoid competition with her face.
The forehead should have more chroma or improve the lights, a little bit.
I would add reddish chroma to her cheeks. Add chroma to the chin in order to create more volume to her face which looks a little bit flat.
I would darken the shadow below her ear.
Her lips may need more color as well.
Finally, I would give more volume to the hair.
Try on the copies first and I would do several copies and then you could choose the one you like the most. For the shadows I would use the violet color that is present on the flowers.
Remember, you are dealing with a very young child and the less you do the better, and no wrinkles or sharp edges.
I hope this helps, since you have done a good job with the entire portrait. I have been painting my grand kids for the last 12 years and they can be challenging to work with.
