Thanks for the great reference images. I especially like the kingfishers!!! The male is puffing out his chest feathers, trying to impress the female.

Re: February 2018 Watermedia Challenge

Kitten!!!!! Ooooh kitten! So cute. Actually more like kittenish cat, from a second look those are adult proportions of someone with very very thick fur. Beautiful subject. I might fiddle these around a bit. Love those kingfishers, curious now if that's a gay pair or if kingfishers are a type of bird that both genders look similar. Could be brothers or lovers, who knows?

The cherry blossoms are kind of screaming to get painted with gouache over a watercolor wash with lots of color dropped into very wet paper. Don't know if I can actually carry that out given space but it would be so cool. Easy in one sense, not in another.

The puppies are funny because they look like a four headed fur blob, they kind of melt into each other and remind me of my granddaughter's multi-headed dog monsters.

Re: February 2018 Watermedia Challenge

Hi folks, nice to see all the enthusiasm!

I certainlty can't take credit for the photos, but it was a lot of fun picking them out. Many thanks to the PixaBay contributors.

Robert, this was in the wikipedia article on kingfishers, so who knows?

"Most species have bright plumage with only small differences between the sexes"

Happy painting, everyone!

Hi Robert,

Male and female kingfishers are almost identical, but the lower part of the beak on the femake is slightly orangish, whereas the male beak is solid black. I.e., the females wear lipstick. However, it is indeed kind of hard to tell from the photo, and I could be mistaken.

The female bird is on the left - there's a slight orange tint to the underside of her beak

That's a lovely photo. I've never seen a pair of kingfishers together.

Re: February 2018 Watermedia Challenge

Cool! thanks for letting me know about the kingfishers. Their pose looks like a courting pair, but I wasn't sure. Second look at that cat, I had to laugh. It's one of those "Moment before Cat Disaster" ones. "Hmm... a plant. I'm going to tear up this plant and eat some of it. And maybe shred some of the tissue paper, that looks fun." Adorable cat and pretty plant. It's so tempting to take the sweet photo and actually draw it one or two minutes later as kitty's chewing the plant and shreds of paper and plant are dangling all over!

Re: February 2018 Watermedia Challenge

Thank you Kay! I've been so busy with my knitting orders and I've had a labyrinthitis (no idea if that's the right spelling) which put me down for weeks so I've had to scale back my art time but I would really like to do this month's challenges as I'm feeling much better now.
