yes... Aspen wood. Unlike Gomuban, it is a rigid material and doesn't cut like butter.... but it is easy to carve, has virtually no grain, and holds a nice clean cut. It is available at many home improvement stores. In my local store, you can get 12 x 96 boards for less than $10.
The real beauty of a woods like Aspen is that they will carry a far finer image than the soft plastics, while still being easy to carve.
