People Sketches

The first two (1&2) are pencil on paper. The watercolour running boy (3) is digital Painter 11. The rest are digital on Procreate.

Re: People Sketches

Lively drawings Bill. It is interesting how similar in feeling the digital ones are to the earlier pencil ones.

Thanks Kate, after decades of drawing people from life in static poses I'm wanting more movement. I'm still working on your portrait, slowly.

Thanks Bethany, I don't know about clever I find people the most interesting subjects for drawing.

Thanks Nathan, yes I was wondering if I could replicate digitally what I do with paper and pencil and I suspect each drawing we do is like a signature hidden in the hand.

Thanks David.

Thanks Constance, they are a bit uneven but I don't mind they are quick grabs as opposed to finished drawings.

Bill,

From what I can see, these drawings are exactly what you intended them to be. They are hard to critique. You're not really aiming for razor sharp accuracy or realism... you're communicating an idea. They totally work. If I must, I'll say #4 is the weakest because the shoulders don't look quite right and it doesn't seem as natural as the others. The last three are really nice. Simple line drawings that show how the subjects move and carry themselves. Really cool.

And yes, I'm loosely following the "3 nice things + 1 negative comment" pattern typical of American posts. Can't be helped.

Earl, sarcasm is also appreciated. You can draw, you can read and you have good eyes what other surprises have you got for us.

Good catch on the shoulders I have redrawn them, we all need eyes that are better than our own.

Re: People Sketches

There are some interesting “searching” lines in your works - that reminds me of Schiele.. thank you for sharing these images!

Re: People Sketches

I like the looseness of these. You've captured a lot of movement and the characters of your subjects. Are they all from life? I haven't done enough of this sort of sketch recently.

Thanks Anya for your comment, its not clear to me what you mean with "searching" lines I thought I was following the contours, from my time in art school I would have thought the pentimenti lines would be searching lines? I know you have atelier experience so any insights you want to give would be appreciated.

Thanks Olaf.

Thanks Harry for your comments. I live more than 200 kilometres from the nearest life class so sadly these are from my photo collection. I belong to a Quick Art group where we are not suppose to post finished works only the start of an idea or exploration so the last 4 are from that group which gives me a chance to see how the subject might look for future works. I'm the only figure artist in the group so we mostly post still life or landscape elements I'm using this as keeping in touch with the human subject occasionally. You should give it a go you have the skills.

Hey Bill, Did you see this news bit about a crime suspect drawing in Pennsylvania?

https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/offbe...5uq?li=AAnZ9Ug

Disclaimer:,
1. I am not comparing your work to the sketch shown in the attached article. Your drawings (which are amazing) are the product of skill and years of work.
2. I am holding up the amateur sketch in the attached article as an example of how effective a simple line drawing can be at communicating an idea.

What do you think?

-Earl
