Some small portraits WIP

mmm never did my own WIP, so here goes...

I'm not sure of the rules, if it's OK, I'll post about a few small portraits that I'm working on in the middle of doing a bigger painting.

1. Portrait of a great little lady.
12 x 10 in. Oil on canvas.

It's beautiful already. You excel at drawing, the lines in the first one are really great.

Re: Some small portraits WIP

I started this portrait last year, trying to get the paint flowing, I went to a friendly little artist's group which was great company but I struggled with this painting too, my brush still stabbing the canvas every now and then, made me very frustrated. So I put it away for a while. Then I did a bit more on it, before deciding to do it again on a slightly larger canvas.. maybe I'll have a go a this one later some time... I love her face and want to do a good job. I have a nice design for a slightly more elaborate portrait for her, in a square format.

Another small portrait:
The Sweetest Little Princess
12 x 10 in. Oil on canvas

In this one, the challenge is to get the beautiful innocence of this little girl. The trusting look.

My standard here for the lips is Jan Vermeer, his 'Girl with a Pearl Ear Ring'.. painted in about 1665, I don't think it's ever been surpassed... the combination of tiny specular highlights and the colouring are really special.

I want to get the lips in this painting to have the same sort of fresh modelling... a tight control of the colour and intensity of the paint... I think Vermeer has captured a fleeting magic moment where his model is unselfconsciously turning, her lips are not closed, but the overall impression is fresh, spontaneous, and relaxed.

Nothing wrong with aiming high...

And I want the hair also to look light and free, and the eyes need to be just right.. so a few challenges here.. a long way to go yet...

Re: Some small portraits WIP

This is just the most precious little model of innocence

Innocence in person.
12 x 10 in. Oil on canvas.
My goal here is to get a nice rendering of the apple and her unbelievably cute natural curls... my new standard for apples is Bill Martin's beautiful paintings...

Since I don't have much time on this one, I'll have to eyeball the colours and just sort of dab them in using a sort of wet in wet glazing, with some lifting and hope for the best...

Re: Some small portraits WIP

an update on the apple...

No stem as yet, later I think when all the preliminary tones are laid down, I'll come back and scumble and retouch a bit...
