The Onion Bulb - casein

The Onion Bulb; casein on Claybord; 10" x 8"

The bowl was my Christmas present and I'm looking forward to painting a fish swimming in it soon. Until that happens, I thought I would get used to painting the bowl from life. (I'll need to paint the fish from a photo - unless I can somehow get it to hold still )

I really loved how the blue paper on the wall was inverted by the bowl - and how the light was focused onto the onion bulb's roots.

C&C welcome!

- Mary

You make such beautiful use of the subtleness of casein; and, the glass is amazing. Gary

Yes, the glass is beautifully rendered and the roots really are the star of the show. You'll have a big onion before you know it the way it's growing!

Thats beautiful! I'm willing to bet that painting doesn't even need a fish. Although if you want to paint the fish from life, get a separate sketchbook and draw it over and over again.

That way you'll practice your speed and visual memory and you'll have a bunch of fish poses to choose from.
