New to forum, site and a sunflower field painting

Whats up my fellow artists, wanted to posta recent painting i made and get some feedback its around 36*48 on verrrryyy cheap brown paper that i use by the roll, i used nupastels to sketch in the whole piece then over that used blick studio acrylics, liquitex basics, and chroma A2s, on top i used a little bit of blick artist and utrechts for cadmium , cerulians and cobalts in pure color.

Hello Spike, and a warm welcome to our corner of the site and the planet!!!

Keep painting like this and you'll be wanting a better surface to paint on! That's one of the beauties of this medium though, paint on just about anything!

I do like your use of colour in this very busy sunflower field.... it works well. I do slso think though that a less busy sky might emphasise the flowers more but it's your painting and you must decide!

Paint more and share them here!

Re: New to forum, site and a sunflower field painting

I choose to paint on these surfaces for the low cost and a professor at the art school i was at before i transferred recommended it. It saves me space too as i work large scale mostly and stoeing several large canvases isnt really practically given i havent sold too much work to date, i save canvas painting mostly for special requests or by the commision. I also occassionally do paintings on strathmore watercolor paper when i want more graphic results or just a afforable sturdyish surface for the field. ive just in a way over the past year grown accustommed to the surface of this drop paper from home depot, plus i love the color it gives to start with. I agree with you on the sky i mightve gotten a bit carries away with the skies color, i tried to harmonize it sorta with the tones in the field

there is muslin - which comes in at about $3+. for a 36"x48"
there is hardboard which is about $4. for a 48"x48".

But there are other considerations. With the hardboard you can paint on both sides - that makes it $2. for a 48"x48", you can also paint over it, which makes it $1 or less for a 48"x48".

Muslin or paper requires some sort of backing (like hardboard) if you want to display it but hardboard takes up more storage space and costs more to ship.

I use to paint a lot on Yupo - I forget the numbers, but if you buy it by the roll, it's not too bad considering with that you can paint on both sides and paint over. I have large pieces with 6 paintings on them!l There you save on shipping and storage, but require a backing for display....

I just paint on one side and am done , i sometimes sell these, but work up to 7 feet tall and like having the toned surface, what is muslin ive never heard of it before? With the paper i been using i just pin them onto my studio wall and go at it and i pin them up as the way i put them up as do those with my work, im not sure how to mount them as well. However i do want to get some hardbord for sure. As i get further into selling art i shall definitely consider this , thank you

Yes, the rule is 1 new thread every 24 hours, to keep the front page from getting flooded by enthusiasts with large portfolios. There is a sticky thread with some helpful info. here .

To cross-post, simply go to the other relevant forum - e.g. for this painting, the Floral and Botanical forum and post a thread there.
You may post the same image in a medium-specific forum and in a subject-specific forum.
WC limits is to 2 forums so we don't flood the site!
