Talking Self portrait , new to site and forum

Hey fellow pastellists, new here to the forum and wanted to share a recent piece of mine, a self portrait. Im an art student in college but without any art classes at the time as well as being off on break and never have posted my art online before. The technique i used here was doing a charcoal sketch, then over that working chromatically in carbothellos, starting with the yellows then the oranges then the reds, purples, blues, greens, earth tones then greys, going light to dark with all colors in that order. Over that i did the same technique with nupastels, before finishing again, same technique with blick artists soft pastels and witha touch of white and black in the eyes on the final layer, i avoid those as much as possible. C&C welcome also i only blended optically with the sticks, not the best photo . Done on full sheet of smooth side of Mi tientes

Welcome, Spike the Creator! That's a very nice self portrait and I like your colorful, energetic style! That's an interesting, chromatic way to paint and you sure got a good result. I'm glad to hear that you use white sparingly - it does tend to give a chalky, dull look but sometimes you just need a little touch. Best of luck when you go back to school and please keep sharing your work here!

Welcome! No crits here because you have a successful way of handling layering. The background adds wonderful energy and movement.

Welcome! You've got a great dramatic style. I like your optical mixing and distinct expressive strokes. Good contours on your self portrait and wonderful use of color with value. Very cool.
