January Monthly Challenge - Join in the Fun!

Hello, and welcome to the January Monthly Challenge! This is open to everyone, all skill levels and mediums, and I hope you feel free to join in. After all, the more the merrier, and this is a good way to start off 2018!

Please comment on one another's work, but don't give any harsh critique unless it's requested by the artist. You can use any and all of the photos (they are my snapshots), make your own compositions/scenes/layouts, crop the photos, or use them exactly as they are to inspire your art. The most important thing is to create and to have fun! I hope many will have time to participate!

Jo, these are all so fabulous! Thanks so much! The second one looks like a place along hiway 87 from San Angelo to Big Spring.

I just put an invitation for this challenge on the home page town center, Jo.

Thanks for the beautiful references. I've already wondered if the bison is part of SW+W

Thanks, Kay. That could be, we go that way often and I'm always looking for windmills. Smile.

tuscanny, the bison photo is from several years ago in northern New Mexico. Didn't have a strong enough camera to zoom in a bit more for details. Better camera now, no bison!

I hadn't realized how old some of these photos are. I painted the windmill back in 2007 with pastels. Guess I should try it again. Ha. I wonder if it was the same photo. Must have been.

Re: January Monthly Challenge - Join in the Fun!

Thanks so much for hosting for us this month, Jo! Such stunning photos, and a little something for everyone. Fantastic! I look forward to seeing what everyone comes up with, and hope to try at least a sketch of one or two, myself. That longhorn cow with the itchy ear cracks me up. I've seen this countless times with our cattle...they can be such funny, clumsy creatures, can't they?

Your painting of the windmill is still so beautiful! Look at that sky! I just love the textures in the vegetation and also in the clouds. Such a great piece, even after all these years.

That's a superb rendering of a windmill scene, Jo, wow!

Christel, my brother raised buffalo here in Texas, and there are some ranches that do, too, although their meat is not as profitable as beef.

Sheila, that's a great resolution! Then you'll end up like me and try to do more than one forum plus the weekend events...LOL!

Jo - beautiful! Love the clouds and vegetation!
It sounds so similar to our conditions here where some farmers have a few wildlife on their farms. Some of those buck/wildlife are expensive and rare species - even the rhino have a place on private owned farms!

Re: January Monthly Challenge - Join in the Fun!

Thanks, all y'all on the windmill.

I sketched in my big coffee table sketchbook with a Pilot fountain pen. I used to draw with a "real" pen and ink a lot and haven't had one. It is so different, not as smooth as the new marker pens, plus the ink bleeds through the paper more, you have to lift it quickly or leave a dot. Anyway something to practice.

A quick sketch of the longhorn cow.

Thanks, Jenna. I am always fast, I get bored. I could never do your pointillism or scratch board. Ha.
