Rolling In

This is a small landscape reflecting a typical storm that we have "Rolling In" a few times each Summer ( Thought I would do a warm summer painting since it is 42 below zero here ) - These storms are quite spectacular, but very powerful and dangerous - They can pack winds of up to 100 mph causing great damage -

The most interesting thing to me is that just before the storm hits everything becomes deathly still and silent; not the slightest breeze and all the birds have stopped singing - Too, a very strange glow falls upon the land - I have tried to capture all that in this painting - Hope I have succeeded -

Painting: Oil on linen. 9 x 12; Palette: Massicott, Yellow Ochre, Transparent Mummy, Ultramarine Blue, Maya Blue, Terre Verte, Cremnitz White -

All comments and suggestions are welcome -

Thanks for viewing - Hud

Re: Rolling In

You've captured a powerful moment in this painting! I've on occasion seen that eerie glow before a major storm, and I think you've captured it really well. I can almost feel the stillness and the humidity of the air in this painting. Really well portrayed!

Jenna: Thank you - Appreciate your comments -

Good word, "eerie" - That is exactly the sensation one gets when these monster storms roll in -

Christel: Thank you -

There is beauty even in such horrific natural events as these storms - I always enjoy watching them; albeit from a safe distance - Have had a couple visit my place; caused a bit of damage to some of my trees and outbuildings -

Again, thanks for viewing and comments -

Re: Rolling In

Good feeling for the storm event. Are these chinook winds driving the storm? Gary

Gary: Thanks for viewing -

You know, I think they are the same type of wind - strong; however the Chinooks occur during the winter - They are called "Snow Eaters"; reason being, as the winds scream down the slopes of the mountains they are heated up by friction and their temperature rises considerably which melts the snow rapidly -

These "Super Cell" storms that I have depicted here are more tornatic in nature and occur during the summer months; they are massive, covering a great area doing much damage - Hurricane force winds; not something you want to get caught in -

Hope that helps -

Again, thanks for stopping in - Hud

Re: Rolling In

Really nice, Hud! I can relate all too well about the "calm before the storm" and that weird feeling in the air

Re: Rolling In

Ron: Thanks - I'm sure you can - Anyone who has lived in this country for any length of time has been witness to these storms; along with the "strangeness" in the air before they hit -

Re: Rolling In

WOW! Great job. I too, relate to the attitude and environment--the calm before the storm.
